Son and I went shopping and found air conditioner fluid (ARTIC FREEZE)on sale here at Farm & Fleet. Before ,it was illegal for that product to be sold in Wis,so we had to go to Minnesota to purchase it.Now (for unknown reasons ,It's now available. Cant figure out why NOW?Having low fluid happens in trucks, cars tractors.Cant understand the reversal of attitudes here in Wis.Any one know why??? Regards LOU

Bryan iniowa.SAY WHAT?????????????????.Any one in Wisconsin can now purchase it over the counter at all parts stores, retail outlets that handle auto parts. NO LICENSE REQUIRED!!!! Now what about the BAD SEALER BEING VOODOO BAD???????Don' make sense to me. Elaborate!!! LOU.

Bill is correct. That sealer is just a smoke dream in a can. It will eventually plug the system up. Most of the time the system has bigger leaks than that stuff could ever fix anyway. The stuff sets up when it hits air. so if your system ever goes completely flat it will stick to all of the internal surfaces.

Plus most mechanics will not work on the system if the sealer has been installed. It will ruin a reclaimer. I just heard on here about some type of filter that is supposed to protect the reclaimer but I have not been able to find them yet.

R12 is illegal unless you have a license. It is illegal to dispense R12 into the air. R12, when in the presence of an open flame creates a toxic gas so nasty that one whiff can kill you(like, if you are smoking a cigarette while it is in the air)

R134a is not illegal without a license. It is illegal to dispense R134a into the atmosphere(but you wouldn't do that, would you?) R134a is available just about anywhere in any quantity and now even has it's own TV commercials. They say even a moron can charge their own A/C system.

However, A/C systems are fairly delicate systems to fool with, and the risk of an overpressurized system exploding is high, especially when the ambient air temp is high. Also, having a lack of formal training with air conditioning systems will lead to people causing more problems than what they can solve, by purchasing a 12 oz can in an autoparts store.

My suggestion is just to take a few minutes and read about automotive air condition systems. Learn all teh parts, their functions, and what they should be doing when functioning properly. The directions on a can are not full proof by any means; and if you will notice, the bottom of the can has a crescent moon stamped impression. This is there because it allows the can to EXPLODE in a controlled fashion. However, it is still an explosion of a pressurized gas in liquid form. As the liquid turns to gas rapidly it causes frostbite and tissue death on anything it touches. So, if you have teh bottom of the can pointed towards yoru face and the compressor kicks off and the can overpressurizes, you will no longer have a nose or eyelids, or eyeballs. You will look goofy!

I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just trying to let you know that you should take a few minutes to understand the system and chances are, with proper safety equipment, you will not loose an eye.

On teh other hand, your mother will then think you are still not happy. I mean, if she is anything like my mother, who swears I will never be happy until someone looses an eye.

On the third hand... I love the fact I can go to a store, buy a can, hook up my gauges, and recharge my A/C especially on a day like today. Having to get a license for the old stuff, and having to take my tractor to the car dealer I worked at, to use their machine, was too much of a hassle.

I'm glad your state has finally approve the consumer sale and use of R134a refridgerant.

The product called "Arctic Freeze" is a environmentally safe hydrocarbon. I does not effect the environment like R-12 and R-134. It is a close cousin to propane. It is flammable.

We've used the 134a before, and all the reviews are positive. It just saves us time and money having to drive to the border of Mn to pick up some of it to keep the system up to peak charging. Unlike the old R-12 or R-24 this newer stuff seems to lose it's potency after awhile. No leaks in our system, had them checked, just looses some pressure from sitting all winter without being used until a hot summer rolls around.
The question really was, does anyone know why it suddenly became legal to obtain in Wisconsin??

To me there is a great deal of BS involved in ozone depletion, especially when coal fired water treatment plants, smelters are still spewing smoke,as with Louisiana Pacific, pumping tons of crap into the atmosphere, not to mention the diesel trucks putting smog into the atmosphere, causing more than what us peons could do in a lifetime, using r-12 and R134a refrigerant, could ever do. If we can do the job charging our air conditioning system in our vehicles, why not. Saves a ton of money, and phoney repair bills ie" you have a bad compressor, plugged expansion valve, hole in evaporator coil, etc etc etc, all this will cost you $2000.00 in parts alone, our shop rate is an extra $100.00 per hr." Spend your money with us,rather than spending $15.00 per can for the refrigerant. and they offer no warranty, because it is a old system, but thats another story.
.

We have an old IH freezer that has the old r-12 in it, never been opened or charged since new, still freezes food solid.
Most of the problems come from the compressor, internal valve seizure and oil leaks voltage spikes motor in the compressor(refrig/freezer/home ac motors -capacitor).A person would have to be a fool, not to recharge his auto ac, with the weather we're having. I'm not sure that this product Arctic Freeze synthetic, has denatured alcohol to remove moisture, but anyway it works. As long as our ac system hasn't been opened, it should be fine.JMHO.

Lou there is nothing wrong with Arctic Freeze. Just don't use the stop leak sealer in your system. Use the Arctic Freeze until the leak is big enough to find. Then fix the leak. I have a little air venturi vacuum generator. It sucks a system out fine. Cost me $45. A good used set of gauges is not more than $100. So with these tools you can charge your system safely.

Of course he is just stirring the pot and its clear he has no idea what is in the product. Granted, I wouldnt personally huff the stuff but it gets vented to the atmosphere every single day within feet from kids, if it was at all bad it would be banned everywhere. As it is, it was legal everywhere [i:c176b3b811][b:c176b3b811]except [/b:c176b3b811][/i:c176b3b811] Wisconsin. Yes, even CA allowed it to be sold over the counter and allows all other use of it.

Weather the turd stirrers like Earl want to admit it or not, Walker is doing a great job here in WI. Its a relief to have a common sense Gov in office rather than the good old boy network that we had been living under. Taxes are going down, civil liberties are being restored, and things are finally looking up. Just the simple fact that our current gov. is welcoming businesses again, rather than putting up road blocks is quite refreshing.

Lou, the law changed just this spring. There are several reasons for the law change, biggest is the fact that our current gov. has some common sense and isnt in some huge corporations pocket like the last one was. Other reasons are, the product is pretty safe and used in different applications where its vented directally to the atmosphere with very little harm. Even states that are beyond strict, maybe even beyond wacko on enviromental issues allows the same use WI now does. Before the law changed, WI was the only one restricting small can sales to the public (Walker refuses to be in the pocket of big business like Doyle loved). The sale of R-134a is big business in WI (and other states), preventing its sale was costing huge amounts of lost tax revenue. Preventing the sale of R-134a was also greatly impacting the enviroment because people that needed it ended up driving great distances to get it. The enviromental impact of driving to other states to get R-134a is huge. Its unbelievable to think the greenies thought it was better to waste hundreds and hundreds of miles worth of fuel under the guise that it was "saving the enviroment". I wont even get into the carbon footprint of earning the wages to pay for all that fuel or the bootleg R-134a, or worst of all, being forced to pay a dealership hundreds or thousands to do what you can do in an hour or so for $20.

Here is an article showing when the new law went into effect allowing the sale of small cans of R-134a. It also talks about the economic impact of the lost money to the state under the old law. Heck, just sales tax alone that is now allowed to be collected on the R-134a is unreal, counted in the millions. http://www.bizjournals.com/prnewswire/press_releases/2012/04/10/DC85205

Rich_WI What a relief to read common sense for a change. Not only did you answer my inquiry, but you did it with common sense. I truly enjoy reading your post. I thought it (non sales to Wisconsinites)was a mistake just for the LOST Revenue that escaped Wis ,going to other states coffers. I truly enjoy the changes Governor walker brought to Wisconsin. My sincere Thanks for such a delightful and incisive post. Warmest regards LOU.

Thanks for the kind words Lou. I knew about the law because we were talking about it at work recently. A co-worker had been forced for years to make the trip to Ill. to buy small cans of R-134a. He thought I was crazy when I mentioned they had a whole shelf full at Farm & Fleet. Just think of the gas he has been wasting for years just to get the relatively safe R-134a. No doubt he hurt the environment much, much more by being forced to make that drive than if he would have been able to go down the street and buy what was needed.

I also agree, its nice to have a gov. that is finally thinking about business in WI. This change went mostly unnoticed here, at least by me and the people I know, but with a little common sense it reverses a stupid law that caused tons of carbon emissions to be spewed into the air and had a very negative financial impact to every day working families here in WI. That sure is a nice change....
