HULLS LEFT ON OATS

I started combining my oats today in norteast oh with my massey 300 combine. It is doing a really nice job. Only problem is that it is leaving the husks on about 5% of the oats. Any ideas? Maybe not quite ripe yet? Every thing is set the way the book says it should be.

The book is only a guideline. If your oats is a little small or a little tough you may have to close the concave a bit or speed up the cylinder or both. A Massey combine is capable of getting the tank sample as near perfect as possible. Play around with the settings a bit and see if you get better or worse sample.

In a real dry year the test weight on oats will be down. Check the oats that you see still with the hull and see if it is a complete seed. We are having trouble with there being about half the hulls that are blanks. No matured seed in the hull but still heavy enough not to blow out the back. IF they are matured then you need to set your cylinder down tighter and speed it up. On JD 6620 we run them full cylinder speed and the cylinder so the bars just don't hit the concave.

run it as tight and fast as you can without breaking up the straw excessively to knock oats out, I don't know a thing about hull less oats, they had dehullers around here years ago as ours leaves the hulls on at combining
