I have a 1982 366 chevy engine that won't start, won't fire. Turns over but nothing else. Have fire coming into distributor but not getting out to plugs. Replaced rotor, module but nothing helps. Do you have some advice.

You have 12V to the distributor, you replaced the rotor / module, but no spark to plugs. Use a 12V test light, grounded to the engine with the probe in the "tac" terminal on the dist cap. The test light should flash as the engine cranks.

No flash, suspect a bad pickup coil in the bottom of the dist.

If it does flash, suspect a bad cap( carbon tracked, cracked), or a bad ignition coil in the cap.

Make sure the coil button is installed correctly,( button in cap first, then rubber washer, then coil).
 
You might want to pull the distributor and inspect the plug that plugs into the module. I had the same problem with an 86 350, just wouldn't start. The plug end was hard and cracked apart. 1 wire was unplugged from the module. Repaired that and it ran better than it did before.
Dad also had a similar problem with his 84' 454, thing ate a module a month $$. We traced it down to the ESC computer. I took out the ESC controlled distributor and put in an old school (1975) HEI distributor and never had another problem.
 
I asume its in a truck does it have a tach wire plugged in where the keyed power goes to the cap, if so unplug it and try, I've seen those tachs go bad a cause a no fire problem
 
I am going to take another distributor that I have and try it. The distributor is turning, does have a tach that wasn't working. The pickup sounds most logical. I really appreciate the infor

Is the tach wire plugged in? If it is unplug it, when they go bad they short to 12v and power up that pickup wire and this causes no fire I've it happen several times
