Magneto Question

I have a 1942 John Deere B with electric start. The tractor has a Wico X Magneto, which requires a connection to the battery for the tractor to run. After doing some research, this tractor should have Wico C Magneto. The question: is there any issues with having a X magneto vs the C?? Thanks!

No, but if it requires a connection to the battery it's NOT a magneto. The Wico battery ignition distributor looks very similar. What have you?

Looking at the model and serial numbers:
Wico
Model: XB4001
Serial: X_029940

I cant read the second digit, so I put an underscore.

The previous owner ran a wire from the Wico to the battery and put a switch in the middle. It needs a juice from the battery for the tractor to run.

I added a picture of it. From the picture there is a wire hanging down which goes to the post that is sticking out of the side.

Which side of the battery does the wire and switch go to?
It may be to turn it off/ground it out. Disconnecting the ground to run.

As said by Royse if the wire goes to neg post of battery they are useing the ground on the battery to ground out the mag.

That is the Wico XB series distributor. It looks the same as the X-series magneto but is a distributor which is why it needs battery power to work.

Thanks!! So, should I change it out for the Wico x or c?? Which is better for the operation of the tractor - distributor or magneto?

The Wico C magneto is what came on the tractor. The X series magneto did not appear until about 1947 or maybe 48. The XB distributor came on a few of the very last letter series Deere tractors which ended in 1951. In 1952 the B was replaced by the 50 series tractor. The XB distributor had a nasty habit of wearing out the point pivot post because it was made of brass and the points were impossible to keep adjusted correctly. so many got replaced with magnetos and later Deere switched to the Delco distributor which was very good.
