three point attachment for JD 999 planter

Hi, I hope I can find someone here with the knowledge to help me. My dad is in search of a 999 JD planter, that should be easy enough to find. He was telling me about how He started planting soybeans with it when he was a little boy.

My dad doesnt talk much about his past for some reason, so when he does I listen. This is special to him or he would'nt concider spending money on somthing like his. He is 78 and still farming.

The story began on the drive to an auction, about the 39 9n fordson tractor. How grandpa had bought it new. (well almost new, it had been a demonstrator first). Then at the auction he began talking with every older farmer there about it. Reminessing, about his dad pulling the notch wire tight and so on.

Then when he first used it, Grandpa had him plant a few acers of soybeans. How ever by this time, he had converted it too pull behind the 9n with an adapter that fit the planter.

Here lies my question, Does anyone know about this 3 point adapter, where I might find one, and what I should expect to reasonably pay for one?

We still have he tractor in the shed, Dads looking for a planter. Sold for more then he was willing to spend, However I was shocked to see him bid as high as he did. neither one of us researched what they were selling for first, Had we I think he probably would have brought it home. It was'nt a steal but was a fair price after all.

I just thought How great it would be, if I found the mount to put the package together for him.

Please any help would be appreciated. Thanks Dan[/b]

I'm not sure if Deere ever made an adapter for a 999 planter. We pulled ours with a shortened tongue and Dad's Allis B . One kid on the tractor, one kid on the planter. There used to be lots of old horse planters or pull type planters converted to 3 point hitches, but most were either home-made or aftermarket kits. Until we went to narrow rows the conversions made a pretty decent set-up for small acreages.

The 999 was a horse planter so finding a three pt there aint any you have to make one then the valu for the planter is bad. So tale the planter to a machine shop and have them build you one.

The "3point adapter" is probably a homemade thing
made from scrap iron.Alot of that kind of thing was
commonplace back then...Farmers didn't have the
money to buy those kind of things."blacksmiths"were
kept very busy converting horsedrawn equipment to
tractor drawn...

I've seen several over the years, and they were all fabricated from materials gleaned from other sources, most not verifiable. There is a standard for three point hitches, and you can obtain new draft pins from TSC or most dealers. It's really not hard to adapt one- just takes some blacksmithing and using your head.

I think Deere did make a kit but that was 60 some years ago, finding one now would likley be impossible. Those planters if good will bring in the $500 range now.

Thank you all for replying. This was a three point adapter mounted to the planter. Dad drove the tractor, no one had to ride on the planter. I am sure this was a 999. The wooden hores hitch was removed. Dad is covinced this was an after market piece someone produced to convert these planters.

I guess if I were lucky, I might find a planter with this conversion already. Was this common back then to convert their horse drawn equipment, or would they most likely baught the 290 instead.
