How hard is it to repair an Allis 200 that is popping our of gear on a downhill grade? Or, How expensive? Does anyone know the mechanics of why these tractors eventually pop out of gear? My brother had three Allis's and they all popped out of 3rd gear. He had my Dad's 200, it was a great tractor but it also came to the same issue. Paul

I will bet money that the guys on the Allis Chalmers forum, right here on YTMAG, can steer you right. Might want to post there. Tom

It's called WEAR, eventually things that move will wear out, somethings last longer than others, some brands longer than others. The other guy is right- post on the Allis Chalmers board I guarantee someone over there has BTDT and can tell you what's happening and how to fix it.

the gears on those transmissions have sort of wedge shaped teeth that lock together when they are in gear. drivers get impatient and grind "just a little" over a long period of time, take the corners off the teeth, and viola! my neighbor's hired man took a wild ride off a steep hill on a 180 with a full allis unloading wagon behind him, years ago. same problem- it jumped out of gear. i had a D14 that lost 3rd gear the same way, which i learned the hard way.
fix is to replace the gears. probably worth it on a 200.

It is from speed shifting them to pull heavy loads at road speed. I learned long ago on AC 180,190 and 200 to ride with my leg wrapped around the gear shift to hold it into road gear.

Wear and abuse are the biggest causes but I know of a 175 Allis that jumped out of 3rd from brand new. I have fixed tractors that jump out of gear by pulling off the shift cover and carefully regrinding the detent notch on the shift rails to give just a little more travel and just a little deeper and stronger detent.
