For what use is the corn crop that is in trouble? Is it for human comsumption as canned/frozen corn or other uses: corn oil, syrup or fuel additives. Should one be concerned about corn containing food shortages as it appears to be multi state.

Don't know what the other guys are useing their for, But here in nw. Pa. "Mercer county" the neighbor's cow feed corn is bout 1 month ahead, should be knee high by the 4 of july, well its 6 ft high and comeing in to tasser

Yellow corn is used for several things and is the most widely growen type of corn. I'm sure I'll miss a few uses.

The greatest useage is livestock feed. Here and overseas.

Then ethanol is second highest useage of yellow corn.

Followed by food uses in everything from corn syrup to cereals and sweeters..

White corn is mostly used in human foods. Tortias, homily and cereals to name a few.

Then there is sweet corn which is almost all for human consuption. On the cob, in the can, and frozen whole kernal.

Corn is the main ingredient in most livestock feed. If there is no corn then they must use other grains, wheat, oats, barely, milo. These will have to be trucked farther. Even if the ethanol mandate is suspended will there be enough soybean meal to make up for the lack of DDGS's produced by the ethanol plants? It will be interesting for sure.

Pete, y'all must be a city boy. Sweet corn is used for human consumption as in canned or frozen corn. The corn that most of us raise is what you city folks call 'cow' corn. It's the stuff you normally see growing all over. But when the crop is poor, it's not the end of the world, but short crops put pressure on the market price for it. It's used to make corn oil products (margarine, corn oil for cooking, etc.), plastics, ethanol, is ground for corn meal to make Fritos and other such snacks, and above all, livestock feed. Because of the tonnage or bushelage, it is the cheapest feed going in most cases. And we export a lot of it, which brings money INTO this country. It probably generates close to half the farm economy of the country overall along with wheat and soybeans. When yields go down, there's a lot of bankers start getting jittery. But no one has starved in this country yet because of a droughty crop. Don't worry.

Thanks folks. Although not a farmer neither am i city boy (smile). I just did not not know for what use the crop is for. Where is sweet corn for human consumption grown and is in in trouble also. Thanks for the replies and thanks for your hard work also.

Gary,

And don't forget grits. When I moved to Iowa in 1961 I saw ads in the CR Gazette for Quaker Oats looking for farmers to contract white corn. I had no idea what it would be used for.

Moved to Florida in 1977 and discovered grits. Looked at the packages in the store and guess where it was made...my old home town, Cedar Rapids. I enjoy them once in a while.
