John Deere 4020 won't start unless pulled

Today when I got done cutting hay I turned off the tractor to make a phone call. When I tried to start it wouldn"t start. I tried jumping it no luck. I then pulled it and it started right up. I"m no expert on John deere as this is the first one I have had. It is in park and it hums when I turn the key. Starter doesn"t turn over. Any ideas guys.

How did it start the last time it started on it's own ? The first place I would look at is the battery cable connections. Check both ends of both positive and negative. If they are OK you need to check the battery. Seeing it starts well when pulled my guess is its a starter problem.

I have a cantankerous Fergy like that, the battery posts and terminals attached are always the culprits, they form a barrier in the connection for some reason and ok when cleaned. Be my first stop. Panic would be my second.

I used to work with an old boy who, when you told of problems with something and could not solve said problems, he would say, "have you sonofabi##xx**d it yet? Didn't really solve any problems but kinda relieved the tension anyway.

(quoted from post at 20:53:48 07/04/12) 12volt diesel. It has started right up all summer.Joe

Check voltage at starter. Humming might be starter spinning but starter gear not engaging the flywheel gear because starter gear fork or starter gear(AKA Bendix)mechanism malfunction.
