Which grease?

I've been using Mystik JT6 M-P on all my implements, lately the zerks on my disk mower have been clogging up. Not doing anything different, clean zerks before grease, clean after. Is there another type of grease that would be better at preventing the clogging but still providing the lube the mower needs?

It is probably the zerks. They can have check ball issues, allowing grass/hay particles to get past that little ball. If possible put in angled fittings that point in the opposite direction of spin, so the impact is lessened. I think it is not the grease. Jim

I looked up the sheet on this grease. It would appear to be a better grease for sliding and pivot types of applications. The sheet says "Excellent adhesion permits it to have better "stay-ability" than most other greases" and "Because this product has better adhesion, it is a little more difficult to pump than less
adhesive greases". So it would appear that this is a fairly thick grease. It also uses "Anhydrous Calcium" as its thickener. I would think anything with calcium would tend to setup. This "sticky" grease is not what you want in bearing and gear box applications. You want a grease that will soften and move toward any friction to lube it.

I switched to JD ploy urea grease ten years ago or more. It cost about twice what the regular grease does, $4.05 per tube, but it does not get hard in fittings and has water inhibitors. It is what JD recommends in the out board axle bearings on the row crop tractors. I am getting much better life out of all my bearing applications since I started using it. U-joints in my 4x4 pickups have had the best response I am getting 5-6 years out the front end joints now compared with half that with just a lithium grease. I rarely have a plugged fitting. Even in disk and things that set between usage a lot.

Here is a usage sheet on it:

Thanks, Jim. I'll replace the zerks with the angled ones and see what happens. You are probably right on the mark about the grass/dirt since the mower has the most zerk problems.

Thanks, JDseller, I'll give the grease a try also. Pretty good trip (60 mile r-trip) to the nearest real JD dealer. There are a couple others but all they really sell are some mowers & gators.

You should just check with the local consumer dealers. The part number TY6341 would be a good number for them also. This grease is recommended for some lawn and garden equipment as well. Worst case just have them order you a case on their stock order. That would only be ten tubes/$40.

I am sure there are other brands that are similar to the Poly-urea grease but I have not found them and I have two JD dealers within ten miles of me. So I have not bothered to look for any other brands.

Do you get fuel delivered to the farm? Our fuel guy also carries grease and oil and that JD grease is nothing special. Your lookin for a EP2 Synthetic grease. Our fuel guy carries Texeco lubes and the grease is blue and called Starplex EP2. We quit buying molly greases, everything gets EP2

There is grease for Roller/ball/needle bearings and the is grease for truck 5th wheels and backhoe pivot points. What works for one doesn"t work well for the other.

No fuel delivery. I have a pickup with a fuel tank in the bed, can get fuel when I need & can fuel my tractors in the field. I'll look for the grease, should be able to find it or the equivalent some where here. Thanks, JDseller.

Went one of the stores today and they had the grease. Bought a box of it. I will try it out in the morning. Have a 20 acre hay field to mow. Thanks JDseller.
