this is our little house in pa, some pictures of the view from the front porch., and,the sides and back yard , My wife and I built it in 1998 with dreams of selling our house in nj some day and retiring there, It has been rented out since it was new the first couple lived there 1 year and got a divorce, the next couple lived there almost 12 years ,and paid the rent on time and took pretty good care of the place, their parents gave them a piece of land, and they are going to move, now I have the task of finding a good tenant, Also , to make matters worse,my wife has informed me that she does not want to retire there. , she wants to stay in nj. Our garden is in a valley to the left of the front porch, The whole place is surrounded by farms that have sold their development rights so it will stay peaceful for a long time, oh well.....

Sorry Larry, It looks like a great place to retire. Talk to the wife some more.I'm thinking NJ will be expensive to live on a fixed income

Give it some time ,maybe she will come around to your way of thinking. Looks loke a great place to retire tome. And what a great idea that is to save farm land, sell the development rights, but who gets said right, and can they use them for development purposes? Tell us more about that please. Bruce

Man, I know your heartbroken. What a gorgeous place. Maybe you can get lucky and rent it out again to some good renters and they will stay for 8 years. Then you will be ready to retire, maybe past ready and maybe just maybe the Mrs. will have a change of heart by then.
Now that I see these pictures, I understand even more why you go there so often, I didn't realize you had a house on the property.
Hang in there buddy.

the state of pa gives the landowner some money per acre, which in turn the farm can not be developed , it stays open land, I do believe the family who owns the farm or land is allowed to build 1 house for there own use

Keep taking the trips out there, wife may change her mind, most people get tired of rat race and want a slower pace when they retire, looks like perfect place

It is beautiful - love the stone chimney. Beautiful land and views.

Great place for grandkids to roam if you do have or will likely have some one day. I'd retire here... and make occasional trips to NJ to visit the friends you have made over the years (especially if you now live in town - to me, rural is the way to go). Heck, you guys can have your friends from NJ come out and stay with you to experience the country.

Sorry your wife doesn't like the retirement plans anymore. If she did at one time and now doesn't, gotta wonder why. I'd move there and let her stay in NJ but you have to decide that for yourself. It's too nice at your country home to waste years living elsewhere you don't like as much. From what I've seen on here of your work, you should have no trouble finding work in the country.

Well Larry I would try to convince the wife to change her mind. You could not pay me enough to live in NJ or NY. I have been to both and have traveled up and down both. There are some places in up State NY that are pretty good and some in southern NJ. I think you live up in northern NJ. There I would hate every minute of living there.

Another thing to think about is what the future cost of living is going to be. The cost will be much higher in NJ to live in your retirement. I know the current Governor has cut things a bunch but there is an avalanche coming in under funded state retirements and Medicare. If they try to pay them then the taxes are going to have to go sky high.

Also look at the age demographics. I saw a report on how the north-east is aging much faster than the rest of the country. The younger people are moving south and west to get away from the high taxes. They are looking at better weather and better job opportunities. So 10-20 years from now, in the heart of your retirement years, who is going to be working to pay the taxes that need to be collected to keep things afloat???

I would be running from NJ. I am a country fellow at heart. If I can see a neighboring house it is too close.

Check this website every now and then. Might help you find a decent tenant. Northwestern-Lehigh is a highly sought after school district. Good Luck

I built the stone chimney and did the stone front, the stone are from an old barn foundation from the area, I put two flues in the chimney with hopes of putting a wood burning heat in the basement, put outside basement doors to carry wood down, dont have a wood stove for tenants though, full basement with poured foundation, heres some pics as it was being built, I did most of the chimney by myself, and did the stone front entirely by myself on sundays

Looks like a very nice home with a beautiful view from the front porch.

Keep your retirement plans alive and enjoy this home away from NJ as often as possible.

Always enjoy your photos of this farm.
