Are you old enough to have had a CB Radio in your past? Ever able to pick up folks far away on an overcast day? Signals would skip off the clouds was my understanding.

I remember in the 50's when we normally had choice of 3 channels occasionally we cold pickup several more. In Wis next to lake Michigan we got Denver, Colorado.

Various levels of the atmosphere may cause the radio waves to "bend" and follow the curve of the earth under certain atmospheric conditions. Don"t get used to watching those distant channels. It may be a very temporary phenomena. I"ve played with the search/add feature on our digital converter - have identified 89 channels that we have received at one time or another. Only about a dozen are usually usable under normal conditions. Even loose some of them from time to time. Some are less than 50 miles away.

Ham radio (amateur radio) operators look for those peculiar conditions when unusual radio propigation allows communications over long distances. Sometimes, they can communicate clear around the other side of the globe. Not bad for radio waves, that travel in straight lines!
