OT: 700r4 trans troubles

I ran across an 87 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 PU. It has an automatic trans ( 700r4 I think ). The problem is, it doesn't shift. It pulls hard in 1st or reverse (will turn the tires), but won't shift. Other problem is the engine will idle after running it up to 30 or so and letting off the throttle. The guy I picked it up from had a flush done ( W/O filter change ). I did a filter change, but still no shift. Anyone got any ideas (TV cable seems hooked from the outside)
Thanks, Tim in OR

I am pretty sure on an 87 the tv cable was responsible for the shift points, the computer only locked the torque converter, when you had the pan off were there any groceries in there?? I would mess with the tv cable adjustment. It's been a long time but I think for initial adjustment you undid the clip, push the accelerator to the wide open position and re-lock the clip and go from there for your shift points, good luck.

Tim,

If the cable isn't broken (tug on it and see if it will come out of the sheath), pull that round cover at the back under the wire bail.

The plastic governor gear is probably apple-cored.

Have seen this before, like Allan/NE said, check the governor gear. Pry the cover off, gov. slides right out. Very cheap to replace.
