i have a john deere gt 275 it has intermittent problems with overheating and stalling out, i diligently clean the mower deck and underneath the belt cover thinking that could be the cause, but it still overheats, sometimes the gas light flashes even when i have enough fuel to keep it running, im thinking the problem may be in the carburetor, any tips? please help

also, i dont know how to take it off of the tractor, i dont have a service manual for it and they cost way too much money, i need pointers on that too

I have a JD GT275, Kawasaki 17 hp, w/48" mower, bought new in '98, completely trouble free. Presumably yours overheats only while mowing? Have you tried removing the deck and hand turning the blades to make sure nothing's "tied up"? Is there something blocking the airflow on the engine? Also, one time when I was doing a thorough cleaning and had the back wheels off I discovered there's a plastic cooling fan on top of the hydro that had grass packed around it. That wouldn't cause the engine to get hot but it's another maintenance issue.

is all the shelding clean you could try a colder
set of spark plugs or try a little sea form in the
gas to see i=f that helps

Make sure the fins aren't packed with dirt and grass clippings, your carburetor may be set too lean or the timing may be retarded. My garden tractor overheated while plowing a few years ago and found a mouse nest packed under the fan shroud. I have a picture of the nest somewhere . Hal
PS: I don't keep any cleaning rags out in the mini barn laying out in the open.

thanks fellas, i did clean the fins, sorry i forgot to add that, i dont really know how to change the air-fuel ratio on the carburetor, any tips on that? plus i was talking to a friend and he said to check the resinator, that it could be clogged, it sounds like an educated idea. what do y'all think?
im an ameteur mechanic on small engines so i appreciate all the tips i can get.. thanks again ,

How do you know its "overheating".Is there some kind of guage?I had a GT262,97 model, same mower just not hydro(manual shift).Mine started stalling out last summer.Come to find out valve springs were shot.Picked up fixed with a new battery and delivered back was about 150.00 bucks and that wasnt even a Deere dealer.

Good Luck

Stan

I would bet that you have an ignition module going bad. Do you have to run it for a good while for it to act up??? Then if it sets for 15-20 minutes it will run great for another period of time??? This is not an uncommon issue on the Kawasaki engines.

The ignitor is #19 in the picture. They are about $65.

(quoted from post at 05:17:47 06/28/12) Are you serious or are you a troll?
i am serious, i wasnt able to get by a computer in a little bit, thanks everyone for your suggestions, im waiting for the new ignitor to come in as i speak, i would like to know one thing, when i was taking the tractor apart i noticed that the metal cage over the fins was kinda chipping away where the bolt hole was, i dont know the exact name of that part and i want to order a new one, can someone help with that as well, thank you all very much,

"JDseller" i think you hit the problem right on the money, because thats exactly what happens to it, i went on my best guess thinking the heat of the engine was the pertaining issue, that was a very helpful tip, much appreciated
