on the distributor cap of a 600 ford where are the 1,2,3 &4 positions for the wire

Remove the #1 spark plug - with thumb over plug hole, rotate engine until you feel compression stroke at TDC. Rotor in distributor should be pointing at #1 position - then go around cap in direction the rotor is turning to position remaining wires. Alternately, a piece of light wire (coathanger) stuck down #1 plug hole will allow you to feel the piston come up - just make sure it is on the compression stroke.

does that # 1 stamped on the distrib cap mean the #1 plug wire goes there. #1 cyl is the one on the front of the eng then go back ward 1,2,3,&4.
