A/C Question

First off I have an 8N with no a/c. My real question is about my wifes '99 Lincoln. The air was not getting very cold so I put in a large can (16oz or so I think) of 134a and the compressor stopped cycling on and off and the air got cold again.

I did the same last summer and I was wondering about the oil in the system. The freon must be leaking somewhere presumably taking oil with it. Is this somthing I should be concerned about?

You can buy small cans with 2 oz of refrigerant oil and a bit of R134a to push it into the system. Walmart and auto parts stores sell them.
They make an easy way to add a little oil to the system.
Make sure you know what kind of oil is in the car AC and what you are buying at the store.
You don't want to add Ester oil to a system that has PAG oil in it.

They have a 134 stuff that has oil a system stop leak and a leak detector all in one can. Wal-Mart sells it for around $15 a can and it is as easy as hooking up the hose and pushing a button and your done

I usually never add oil to a slow freon leak. The R-134 is a very small molecule chemical. Oil has a much larger molecule. So most times the freon leaks but the oil does not.

This molecule difference is the reason they used to tell us that a R-12 system would not work with R-134 in it. They claimed the R-134 freon would leak out the R-12 rubber lines. Later we where told the old lines had become plugged with the oil so the R-134 did not leak out . So I am not sure what it the "real" answer. Either way I would not worry about adding oil unless you see it leaked some where.

Stop leak can ruin a compressor. You need to know if it has been added previously. I used double shot on Roadmaster Buick and ruined everything. Sold car cheap. Dave

Thanks for all the replies!

I have decided that I will stay with the 134a that I have added and inspect the compressor and lines next time I am under the car for oil leakage.
