lots of 4x4 trans with push buttons on the dash to shift trans, [the eletric motors], build up tarnish on points, after working them a few times, it frees up points, and will be o-k...use the buttons about once a week to keep everything moving. because of climate conditions in different regions, they can build up moisture and tarnish in switches...

There could be any number of problems with that thing that range from the switch and controls to the actuator motor or hard parts of the transfer case. This seems more of the electrical nature...
Use it more often. Be carefull how you shift it, etc. Shift motor could be getting weak too...

Yes, most have a small motor that controls the 2wd to 4wd if it is push button. What I find I odd is it stuck in neutral. Most of the newer smaller t/cases I thought had got rid of the neutral position. 2wd, auto, 4HI, 4Lo is typical.

You also have a module that controls that motor too. If the picture posts, you will see the motor on the left side. I have changed a few of these on Chevys.

I have a '98 Explorer and have learned through experience that the weak link in the 4x4 drivetrain is the shift motor on the transfer case.

This item can cause the transfer case to stick in 4-high or low and indeed between the detents which sounds like what is happening in your case.

If the shift motor is removed you can actually shift it manually by turning the exposed shaft with a pair of vicegrips but a replacement motor is available for $125 or so from your local parts store.

Good luck and if I can help give me a buzz
