Anybody know what causes this? It's affecting about one in five of my tomatoes.

JerryS,
I read on YT Site last year that's caused by Cultivating or Hoeing too close and deep, cutting off some important feed roots.

That has been one of my main problems for years hope this works. My 1st year trying this, I'm only scratching the surface NO HOE just to keep the weeds down.

Looks like blossom end rot. There are sprays available to help prevent it. I have found that staking my plants seems to help somewhat. It will not spread from plant to plant so don't get too excited. It generally occurs when a rapidly growing plant is subjected to drought-like conditions because the tomato doesn't get enough calcium. What kind of tomatoes?? Some are more suseptible to it than others. Check out this link. Kippster

Seems to be a problem with certain varieties, not with others. "Early Girl" is the favorite variety in the cool, rainy Pacific Northwest. Never get it on Early Girl.

I usually grow 3 tomato plants- a cherry tomato, an Early Girl, and something else. Only time I have had the problem is with the "something else"- depending on the variety.

As I'm pretty much a "plant 'em and forget 'em" sort of guy, I guess one-in-five ain't so bad. Thanks for the info, guys.

A friend told me to put 1/2 cup of powdered milk in the hole when planting my tomatoes. I laughed but did it. Haven't had blossom end rot since and it's been 3 years. The calcium in the milk does the trick. Worth a try, Keith

I gotta say milk helps the garden. I had very good luck using it against powdery mildew last year on my butternut squash and fairly good luck on zucchini and summer squash. I used 10% milk to 90% water. The other good part is it doesn't hurt anything but I never thought of adding powedered milk for tomoatoes but it totally makes sense. I haven't had a problem with this, yet, but I wonder if spraying the plant with the powdery mildew milk mixture would have a positive affect.

Miracle Grow makes some great stuff, Shake n Feed plus calcium. I've never have a big blossom end rot problem, a few here and there, now I have none. Calcium fixes it right up.

I've had my share of blossum end rot and that does not appear to be it. Not sure what else it maybe though. I use epsom salt mixed with fert. when i plant. Good lkuck.
