Find out how sharp you are. Instructions:
Allow yourself no more than 5 minutes to answer the following 10 questions. Have fun—and keep an open mind. (Tip: you may not want to write down your first response.) Most important, don’t stress: no one is expected to get all 10 right.

How Sharp Are You?

1. Being very tired, a child went to bed at 7 p.m. The child had a morning piano lesson, and therefore set the alarm to ring at 8:45. How many hours and minutes of sleep did the child get?

2. Some months (like October) have 31 days. Only February has precisely 28 days (except in a leap year). How many months have 30 days?

3. A farmer has 18 pigs, and all but 7 died. How many were left?

4. Divide 50 by 1/3, and add 7. What is the answer?

5. What is the minimum number of active baseball players on the playing field during any part of an inning? What is the maximum?

6. What four words appear on every denomination of U.S. currency?

7. If a physician gave you five pills and told you to take one every half-hour, how long would your supply last?

8. If you had only one match and entered a cold, dimly lit room where there was a kerosene lamp, an oil heater, and a wood-burning stove, which would you light first?

9. Two women play checkers. They play 5 games without a draw game, and each woman wins the same number of games. How can this be?

10. What word is mispelled in this test?

Answer Key
1. 1 hour, 45 minutes
2. 11 months (all but February)
3. 7 pigs lived
4. 157 (3x50, +7)
5. 10 is the minimum, 13 the maximum (i.e., 9 fielders + 1 batter + 3 base runners). Add 1 if you count the on-deck batter.
6. “In God We Trust” or “United States of America”
7. Two hours (You would take 1 immediately, then 1 per 4 half-hours)
8. The match
9. They aren’t playing each other.
10. “Mispelled” is misspelled.

good game, but it is a bit skewed.
answer one could be as you state. however, the child goes to bed at 7.p.m. you don't state if the alarm is set to 8.45 pm or a m. so it could be 1 and a half or thirteen and a half, or knowing chidren anything in between.

answer 4 cannot be 157. (you used a calculator) you asked us to divide 50 by one third and add seven, not multiply.
if it were dividing it would be 16.66666 plus seven which would be 23.66666 i.e if you had a barn 50 feet long and wanted to divide it into three pieces, it would not end up being one hundred and fifty feet long.
good gsme

Those quizzes are interesting, but I get PO'd at myself every time I try one. Then when you go back and check the answers, they all make sense. Hate to admit it but I only got 6,7,9,&10 correct. But, then I have been fighting a bad case of DumbAzz lately. Ain't much treatment for it either.

Think you've got that backwards.

another way to look at is:

one third is equal to 1 divided by 3 which is .3333333

if you divide 50 by .3333333, you get 150

Add 7 to 150 you get the 157

It's more a word trick - you just assume if you're going to divide, and there's a fraction involved that the question is looking for the value of that fraction - in this case 1/3. It's easy to forget that to divide by a fraction it's a different process, and not often done.

to multiply 50 by 1/3...

50/1 * 1/3 = 50/3 or 16.66666

to divide fractions - you multiply by the inverse
so to divide 50 by 1/3... invert the 1/3 to 3/1 and multiply.

50/1 * 3/1 = 150/1 or 150

Fifty divided by three is sixteen and two thirds.

Fifty divided by one third is one hundred fifty.

Try it again, with or without a calculator.

sorry wasn't clear there - what I meant is that it's a trick in the wording.

You'd assume if somebody tells you to divide a number by 1/3 that you're looking for 1/3rd of that number. That would be correct if they said divide 50 into thirds.

But they didn't, they said divide 50 by 1/3.
That's much different than saying divide 50 by 3 to get one third of 50.

That was fun... and I'm smarter than a 6th grader. I got six correct, she got 4. We both thought it was fun. Though I think I should get a half point for #1 as I answered, "It depends what time the child fell asleep". Bombed number 4 - I came up with 158.something,something,something.

Feeling pretty smug, as I got them all right, but I did the test first thing this morning while mind is fresh.
