Kow Farmer - I followed your advice with a light on the chickens all night. Haven't seen any coons but this guest has been by two nights in a row.
The chicks are small enough that I can close them inside the inner pen - but that won't last much longer.

try again

I have been using just a regular heat lamp for years. I'm curious if a brighter light shining away from the chicks would maybe keep this fox away? Too bad you can't wait for him somehow. Also, now that you know that there is a fox around, do you have access to a live trap to catch that varmint?

I used a 3ft florescent tube.. If you have a normal fixture, can you still buy them florescent hoops that screw in?? daylight bright without hurting your eyes and much less electricity.....

I have always kept a light on in the chicken houses and that never slowed down the coons but when I added an electric fence wire both close to the ground and along the top of the fence I have not had any more problems out of the 4 legged problems. Now snakes on the other hand

Put a leg hold trap on the perimeter, Mr. Fox WILL be back, many times. He will walk the edge of the cage looking for a way in and he will put his foot in your trap. It helps if you put an obstruction that is needed to step over because it targets where they step.

You can also do a bucket set (with no bottom in the bucket) to trick Mr Fox into thinking he can get into the cage through the bucket.

Mr Fox WILL be back. Maybe not every night or even frequently but will always come back when wondering the neighorhood. Count on it.

A bright light wont help, they just get used to it. Live trap wont work either, foxes rarely go in live traps.

yes, he will be back, and if you're not carefull he will find a way in, I tend to think they are the cat of the K9's

I agree with old on this one.

There's no substitute for a good zap to keep predators away.

A few wraps of wire around the hole structure should keep them looking elsewhere for food.

We put a motion sensor light on our hen coop that shines towards the woods. Our harden is also behind the coop. Has worked wonders for keeping things out of the garden so far and haven't had any issues with the coop either. Hens go inside at dusk and we shut the door. Their pen is fenced on the sides as well as the top with the fence buried 18 inches deep. Our neighbors estranged wife just moved back in with her two beagle mixes that like chickens so we may be putting up an electric wire soon as well. Their current method of trying to get in is running and jumping into the fencing. I think a few jolts would stop them.
