OT----WAR with Japanese Beetles!!!

I have a huge problem with Japanese Beetles. I have several trees that they target along with my roses and other bushes.
I have been spraying them with Spectracide and Ortho--both listed to kill this pest. These were new and sealed when bought.
Strange that I have not found a single dead beetle under any tree or bush after many sprayings!
I went to the Co-op yesterday and bought a liquid Sevin concentrate and sprayed all my plants.
BINGO----dead beetles all over the ground!
I did a google search for Japanese Beetles and was surprised to see that the active ingredients with both Spectracide and Ortho are not even listed as effective!! However Sevin's ingredient is.
Just wanted to share this bit of information but my problem may be different.

Check out milky spore. It's lethal to JBs but pretty much benign to everything else. It's a spore that will grow in the soil and I've seen great rsults in the past. Being a bee-keeper I dislike sevin in any form. The bees will transport it home and kill the whole hive. JMHO.

I agree with you concerning "bees" and other beneficial insects!
However I have not seen any on the plants I have sprayed. They are, however, on my Crete Myrtle and Rose of Sharon.
I do not spray these for that reason.
Normally I would just let the problem go, but they are stripping the leaves from my ornamental trees!

Do you have fields around your place? Next year when corn is planted have grub insectcide used. You will be surprised at the reduced population of Japanese Bettles.
Just remember it may take you a couple of years but they will be gone.
In the mean time get the betle traps from your local coop.

milky spore is not effective against european chaeffer beetles which look similar to the jap beetle grub. that may be why the ortho products didnt work as well but sevin did.

I have app. 2 acres on the outskirts of the city limits. I have neighbors all around and I think that may be part of my problem. I dought if many of them do anything to discourage these insects.
I bought three traps and placed them app. 150 feet from the problem areas and my problem got worse. I think I may have pulled some from neighboring properties.
In three weeks I had app. THREE gallon of dead beetles! And They STINK!!!!
I read somewhere that traps may increase the problem so I removed them and the infestation problem decreased a little.

No--I googled "european chaeffer beetles "-- and that is not what I have. What I have is exactly what is pictured on one of the containers as being JB.

I know the powder version will, but I was under the impression that once the liquid dries off that was not an issue. I spray late in the evening to prevent bee contact with the liquid. Squash bugs and corn worm are my problem. Have I been mis-informed?

we had them really bad too. i started setting out traps and have to keep my fruit trees sprayed with sevin too. i hooked my beetle traps up to old plastic drums so they can hold a whole bunch of the little devils. lot of guys dont like the traps because it brings the beetles in, but when you get 10 to 15 gallons of dead beetles a week, it sure puts a dent in the population. heres a couple pics of my beetle traps. i cut a hole in the bottom of the bag and tape it to a pipe, then stick that in the barrel.

What about tempo?

years ago we use to be plagued with them don't see much of them anymore, i've seen them hanging from tobacco like pods of grapes, when sprayed with liquid sevin in just a few minutes the middles would be full of dieing beatles

UPDATE---I went out and sprayed my trees again today. I saw only a few beetles and many more dead ones on the ground. I didn't even give them a complete treatment. This has never happened with the other sprays even though they are listed and one even had a picture of the JB on the front of the container.
I just wish I had used Sevin to begin with!
I hope this helps someone else.
