Same old 4000 SU axle blues

I've read here that a person can get a stronger axle center for the 4000 SU that is made for some other model, but fits the 4000 SU. It's really getting old having it spradle out when moving dirt.

I haven't found any specifics on this change over. It seems like someone said the 4000 axle will do it, but my memory ain't what it used to be.

Can someone please tell me which tractor axle I can get to make this switch and/or a part number for it.

Also, I'm having trouble finding front tires for it that don't have to be mounted backwards. The wheels are 15 inch with a 5 1/2 inch back set. (I'm about ready to take them to a specialty shop and have the back set converted.) There is a 7.00-15 truck tire on it and it rubs on the knee when mounted inward. (Turning them out worsens the weak axle problem.) Is that close fit a design problem (like the axle) or do I have a bent spindle as well?

I've never bought front tractor tires, so I'm ignorant on that score.

The only thing I've found so far that seems close is a 6.70-15-06 implement tire. All the 6.00 tires I've found are 16 inch and I don't want 4.00 tires under that loader. I don't know if the word "implement" with tire is a good thing or a bad thing. I'm guessing the main difference is how much side traction they have compared to 3 rib, and I'm not concerned about that.

I'll appreciate any help, information and suggestions I can get.

The axle from a 3400 might fit...
BEst thing you can do is hang the heavies impliment/counterweight on the back that the three point can lift. That should aleviate the problem somewhat.
Either that or mount an entire 4500 front end under the tractor.

As Rod says a 3400 (1965-75) or I think 335 (76-82) will fit your tractor. It is a direct replacement though you might have to jerry rig the ball joints on the ends of the steering cylinders.
Another thought is to have a set of rims made for you. Dishing them out really ads to the stress on them - remember Archimedes?
Pic is of a 3400 axle. Makes a man out of that girlie 3000/4000SU axle you're running now.

That tractor should have 16" rims and not 15" and the 4" rim does not have the dish needed for anything but a 6:00 but the optional rims were 6" and work perfectly with the 7:50 X 16" tires they were designed for and that rim is the same as was used on JD 45 combines in the rear steering tires and it is a perfect replacement rim. You could even put a 7:50 x 18" tire on that tractor for loader work same as was used on some 4000 and 5000 models.

Thanks. Source?

Tell me about it. I've broken 2 spindles.

I don't think Archimedes would at all understand why building lower requires building weaker.

Any idea what the dish's back set is on those JD 45 rims?

back side 4 5/8" and front side 2". That is what I had on the 4000 (4100) that I had. first one came with one wide and one narrow with 7:50 X 16" tires, the narrow one just rubed the spindle, happened to be looking at a combine rim I had and seen it was the same so put it on and was as should have been, then second had both narrow rims with the 6:00 x 16" tires, helped a friend junk out his JD 30 pultype combine and rims were same so kept them and put the 7:50 X 16" 8 ply implement tires on the second 4000 and put the good 6:00 X 16" on the 2N Ford and 20 some years later they are still on there. I had put on a new set of 7:50 X 16 rib tires on that 4000 later. Same rim fits the Deere 12A, 25, 30, 45 and 55 combines and some of the 55 I think had the 18" rim and that with a 7:50 X 18" tire is what I had on the 5000. The first 4000 had a loader and I thought I would like to find but never did (didn"t look that hard) to find a pair of the 18" for aditional carrying under the loader, only used the loader for snow tho. Have a pair of the rims not used if you are close enough. Western Ohio

(quoted from post at 17:35:56 06/19/12) back side 4 5/8" and front side 2".
If that's measured to the very outside edge of the rim mine is 5".

I'm not sure what you mean by wide and narrow. Do you mean like a 6.00x16 rim versus a 6.50x16 rim?

I used to haul a lot of timothy from W. Ohio to Florida, but I'm 3 miles from the south line of Tennessee.
