replacement parts rant

The nut on my sediment bowl filter stripped, was tired of it dripping gas so I bought a replacement bail assembly. Carquest had to order it. New part came in but the threaded screw was tapped at an angle. The nut wobbled almost 1/8th inch. I took it back, they ordered another. The new one was exactly the same. Made in India and the jig must have been set wrong or worn out. So I went to NAPA and had them order me one, almost three weeks now. The new NAPA part came in on Friday. It is exactly the same as the other two. Going to make it work somehow, maybe pad the glass with some gasket material, but fer crying out loud. First of all why do we as a country have to buy crap made in India secondly if we do buy it there what is wrong with a little QC.
Each of these parts were in their own little package with the parts store name on it, but there is no question they came off the same production machine. OK rant over.
Happy Dads day weekend.

Can't help you with the poor quality of the new part, but I have taken the next size larger bolt, cut head off, made a slot in end of bolt, squeeze it on bail and rethread old nut to that size. If you do it carefully no one will ever know or see the difference.

Another solution (I like Pete's) is to carefully grind the cup to flat. Put it on a bolt use a jamb nut to keep it from turning, and gently spin it against the side of a grinding wheel, or a belt sander. Jim

Are you refering to the "Nut" that holds the fuel
bowl down? I"ve got 2 new complete assemblies here, came from TISCO, and the nut that presses
up against the fuel bowl does have some play in
it. I THOUGHT that they were SUPPOSED to have
some swivel, so as to center on the glass bowl.

Yes, they are supposed to have some wobble.

Seems that the only quality control for aftermarket parts comes from the end retailer, and if he isn't familiar with that particular part, or won't take the time to inspect it before passing it on to the customer, then there is no quality control.

Your best bet is to buy replacement parts from a retailer who KNOWS and is familiar with the parts you need, and no, that retailer is probably not CarQuest, O'Reilly's, or NAPA. Not in today's world.

Hey Grey,Cman the bolt part is supposed to move and swival, but the threads are supposed to be true and centered. This hole was tapped at an angle. Rusty that would be nice if there was a retailer around here that knew old tractors :)
Jim I'm going to try your idea, I have nothing to lose, the package self destructed and the parts house won't take it back. I'm out $7 and they are out one more customer.

That sucks. my personal comlaint today about parts stores is when I went in to the local Advance Auto Parts store to get a neutral safety switch for my 72 Plymouth I was told that it was a deaaler only item. WHAT! they have been selling them over every counter for years. My guess is their supplier didn't have them (not much demand) so rather than give a competitor some business they send you to the dealer.

I chuckle every time I read a post like this. My new part from "the land of almost right" won't fit right, don't work right, don't look right, etc.. Who's to blame? Of course not those who stand at the counter and tell you your part costs too much and I want cheaper.
I was told that enough times that I finally decided it wasn't worth my trouble to try and compete. Not only did I stop making parts that were still available from other suppliers, I also stopped making custom parts that are no longer available.
Most parts like the bowl bail I'm surprised are even available anymore at a run of the mill parts store.

The problem your having is caused by a few things. #1 going to a wannabe auto parts store. #2 by the fact you pretty much only find junk parts now days. #3 that is the reason I keep a lot of old stuff like sediment bowl parts from ones that got broken or some such thing so that I have good parts on hand. Now if you had gone to say a NAPA or a good not all of them are O'Reilly's you might have gotten a good part

NAPA parts online list some neutral safety switches for some 72 MOPARS, I just looked.

Ever hear of buying from an on-line retailer?

Part of yje problem is young people saw their parents and grandparents get laid of from skilled trades when production was moved to India, etc. Now many companies want to make things over here again (due to the problems you mention) but much of the U.S. skill base has moved to health care and other fields.

Kind of shot ourselves in the foot. The are advertising on TV here for skilled people.

You can buy the whole sediment bulb with the glass at most farm stores.Buying just the pieces usually doesn't work, nothing interchanges.

Old, I realize that heyseed can defend himself, but I'm going to say this anyways. How is Car Quest a wannabe parts store? Just as good as I've ever found Napa to be and nearly always cheaper. Had you read the original post you would have seen that he went to Napa (a real parts store, according to you) and gotten the same low quality part as Car Quest. I Napa is #1, Car Quest is a close 2nd. I also seem to recall you stating that you use O'Reilly's on a fairly regular basis because the other stores are farther away. Not sure you're in a position to be telling this guy not to use O'Reilly's. I'm not going to comment on the original post as the QC issue doesn't surprise me nor does the fact that both Napa and Car Quest source them from the same company.

There's some play, in all of'em, as far as I can see, today. I rarely strip them anymore, cause of something my grandfather taught me. Next time you take one off, that's been on a while, first put penetrating oil on it, then tighten, a little, to compress the gasket, then oil, again, and loosen. When you re assemble, if the gasket is being re-used, slip a dime, between the bail nut, and the bowl. It puts different threads ( a little lower on the bolt) under pressure. Never tighten with anything other than your fingers and thumb! I used a pair of vice grips, a danglin under the fuel bowl, for about 6 years, on the ole D-19, when one of the ears broke off of the bail bolt. It was a field repair, that became semi-permanent!

yeah I went down the street to the "good" store(motor Parts Central) and they had one in stock, $13.00. I had this answer before from them but this time it confirmed my suspicions. I oughta know better, but they were open and close.

Again I will say a real parts store but then not all of them are even close to the same. We now have an auto zone in town and boy what a joke of a store. If it is not in the computer they can not find it and yep a wannabe store. Also as I said most new parts are junk any more so reread what I said
