OT: Denture Implants

Mother-in-law got jaw implants done when she was probably in her late 50's. I think she likes them - but it did look like it was a pretty big surgery. Her whole face was black and blue and swollen for awhile.

Thanks for the reply. How often does she has to have the dentist clean the implants. I saw on the Internet that said the implants have to cleaned every night after you remove the denture. Hal

My sister had some done a couple of years ago. They must have worked out well, if they had not you would be able to hear her complain clear to your house. Joe

I've heard of dentures being anchored in place using implanted pins in the lower jaw. The dentures snap onto the pins and are secured by the pins from moving while eating or talking. The tongue in the lower jaw is in the way of using a continuous plate across the mouth like the upper dentures so pins are used for anchoring.

Do your research. The ones you are talking about are just a few locator pins and the denture snaps onto them. Then you have the true implant where the screws are put into your jaw and the hybrid denture is screwed onto it and doesnt' come out until the dentist unscrews it. The whole thing gets torqued down to 35 Newton meter or so. Then you have the implants that support a 4 tooth bridge and those aren't as popular because they break and are harder to repair. Stay away from mini implants...real thin and are subject to breakage.
If you're short of bone, they can graph more bone in and it'll take about 4 months for it to become your bone. The implants "ossify" into your bone or your bone grows into the implant and they'll never come out. Your hybrid denture should get taken out once a year and cleaned and you should go for regular cleaning from a hygenist. Pick your dentist with care. This is high tech stuff and not cheap. If you have a dental school close by, give them a call. They'll explain it all to you and do it for much cheaper. For a few missing teeth, you get an implant and a crown and about 3k cost from a private dentist and maybe 1800 from a school.
Google implants, mini implants, hybrid denture ...do your research.
Once you buy them, you'll love them.

I just had the screw put in for my first implant. This is a single tooth and will get a crown in 6 months. Procedure is pretty easy and I didn't have any swelling or significant pain at all. That is if you don't count the pain of writing a $2,500 check for the implant, plus another $750 for the crown in 6 months. So far, so good! By the way, I thkink the torque on the implant is in Newton-centimeters(not meters). Kind of interesting having a screw torqued into your head while you're alert.

Hal,

Just called her...She said she brushes/flosses around the implants each morning before putting dentures in - so that is not a big deal.

She said she does not know if she would choose to spend the money and have the surgery now as she is about 75. She said at this point she would probably just try to "get by". However, as I'd mentioned in the earlier post, she really does like the way the implants hold things secure. So if you decide to do it, I'm sure you will like it as well. Best wishes, whatever you decide to do!

I have 5 implants holding fixed bridges in my lower jaw. I love them, Not meant to be removed. Flossing is important but I can't poke the floss through all areas. So I use a Water Pik. Works great. Have to have cleaning by a hygienist twice a year. Quite expensive venture, need about 3 dental insurance policies stacked and seasoned when you start the process.

Thanks to all of you that responded. I'm planning on using a dental school that does this. My neighbor had 7 implants installed there each with a new tooth. I'll keep you informed how it goes. Hal
