powedery mildew cures for pumkins/squash

Couple of ways, don't water at night/evening, plant in direct sun, use drip irrigation. These should all help. If not try 4 teaspoons of baking soda to a gallon of water and you can add 2 teaspons of dish soap or veggie oil as well. Neem works good so doesnt a mix of 10% milk to 90% water. Prevention - spray once a week. I used milk last year to see how it would work and it did great on my butternut squash. Not so hot though on zucchini and summer squash. I used the Neem on there and it did better.

skim milk/whole milk?

in other words does the fat content help/hurt this remedy?

Thanks.

I used 2% because it was what I had. I would use it after it had been getting near the end of it's shelf life in the fridge. I have not ever heard of why/how it works, but it did work. And darn, it's milk, can't hurt much even if you over mix or anything like that. Try both, let us know how it works out for ya.

Cucumber beetles are the carrier(striped yellow and black). Kill them when the first round of the year comes out. If you get them early, the PM issues are lessened later in the season. I use Sevin XLR plus, 1 Qt/ Acre. I probably spray 3x a year in an average year. PM resistant varieties help.

Cucumber beetles are not the carrier for powdery mildew. They are the carriers for Bacterial Wilt. It is a bacteria in the mouths of the cucumber beetle. The plants will die before setting pumpkins. Sevin XLR will kill them. I like to use Permethrin.

Sorry my bad, too hot here today, and just came in from spraying the little bastages. Had them on the brain.

Have ever striped your seed rows with with Imidacloprid/gaucho/admire? Would seem you could do it once and be done, and not have to check daily for bugs.

Raised about 10 acres of pumpkins for 28 years. We used a fungicide called Captan 45 which I don't think you can buy any more but did a good job. We had more trouble with powedery mildew when the humidity gets high. If not stopped you can lose your crop.

I have in the past, but now I will not use neonicotinoids, it is not proven but I am afraid they are having an affect on honey bees. I use non systemic insecticides (permethrin) I will not use sevin XLR late in the season when the bloom starts. Sevin is very hard on bees.

I do not think I am going to have to worry about any of these things this year. I finished planting today and it is so dry none of what we planted the last two days is going to come up unless it rains. I am seriously considering having a well drilled for next year. Drip irrigation would be nice this year.
