That time of year... Babies everywhere.. Been watchin a mama deep and two fawns for awhile. Saw them today before some rain came in a field....
Neighbor came along later with a mower and forage wagon and cut most the field. About an hour later, I see the doe standing in the middle of the cut area smelling the ground and looking around. Went down to find a couple little hooves and a few pieces.... Guess the neighbor will get a surprise when he unloads......

Part of me goes, "Awww, poor baby!"

The other part goes - part of life and critters are a little too thick around our neck of the woods.

Yup, know what you are saying.

Dad used to mow around pheasent nests (back there were many here) if he saw them in time.

But then when he came and raked the hay, the remains of the pheseant were there - the fox & etc. could go right to the tall bit of hay & catch the pheasant. Dead ma, cold eggs.

Whatcha gonna do?

I'm that way with killdeer - work up bean groyund, and they go running away with a 'broken' wing - all pretend. If I can figure out where the nest is, I try to drive around it, leave those camofloged eggs in their rock nest. When you come backplanting or spraying, and those little ones are dashing all around on the ground - kinda cute.

They are really cute. We had some hatch in our pasture a few years ago. They look like a little wad of feathers on stilts.

I can't even begin to tell you how many I scared up this year. Haven't hat one yet that I know of. I've broken a WHOLE bunch of turkey eggs though. Even got a hen on the nest this morning. EXTRA POINTS!
