Engine oil in air cleaner housing?

Any idea's as to why I would be getting engine oil up in the aircleaner canister? Engine is a D239 IH in a 544D. Father in law said possibly the air cleaner was too plugged, but it seemed to run fine. Any offers of suggestions would be appreciated. Have to replace the radiator so I figure I may as well try and correct this problem as well if I can. Engine has about 4500 hours on it.

Crankcase Ventilation can cause the flow of normal blowby to go the wrong direction. If the suction end of the piping is attached to the aircleaner prior to the body of it, that would be my answer. Check the condition of the road draft tube where it exits the engine. If it is plugged up, at its vapor liquid filter, the answer may be to clean it. Jim

If it is an oil bath air cleaner would you believe that is normal. With the engine running the oil is in fact sucked up into the mess and that in turn catches the dust/dirt then drops in into the cup. On any tractor with an oil bath air cleaner if you pull the oil cup off with it running you will find that some oil is missing and it is in fact up in the mess doing its job
