Coyote?? or Deer?

Tedding hay this morning saw this deer colored creature, long tail nearly reached the ground, no ball on tail. Ran a short bit, stopped turned toward me, couple more steps & turned toward me again, etc. First thought it was a half-grown deer; bigger than any coyote I've seen; the color of a deer; that long straight tail without the coyote ball. Wish I had a camera or a gun!

You did say what part of the country you live. It could also be a mountain lion by the way you described it,

If it is a Cougar, then when haying - you better take both the gun and the camera along. Shoot with the gun first, save the camera shots for "after".

Sounds like a mtn.lion to me. Here in central NY, DEC says there are none, but many of us have seen them and a local trapper caught one, which had a telemitry collar on it. There wasn't much they could say when he delivered it to their office in Stamford.

One was hit and killed by a car in Connecticut recently that they know traveled through Wisconsin several years ago and they think it began life in South Dakota.

dont know where you are ,but if you do "eleminate it" and its a mtn lion, dont advertise it much.they finaly admmited they were here and made them legal to shoot here in very specific circumstances, but ive known of folks getting into real serious trouble. Protected in a lot of places still yet. Dept of wildlife here for years denied there were any, even though they were seen regularly, but finally admited them after so many folks got pictures on game cameras. If i read the law right they have to be almost attacking you before you can legaly shoot one here. And you have to report it if you do. If not you are totally in the wrong regardless of the circumstances. Oddly enough, lots of farmers and ranchers here welcome them because they help keep deer herds down. Ive only heard of one attacking a farm animal that had any tangible proof and that was a young colt, didnt kill the colt, but he sure tore him up.

that cat hit by the car was big news around here, it was spotted a few times in the upscale town of greenwich in the week b4 it was hit. guys i know that are big time deer hunters say they have seen a few cats here in ct, but the deep says there are none? the cat that was hit was given a necropsy and they took fur samples for dna testing and it was confirmed to be from south dakota.

(quoted from post at 18:49:30 06/07/12) Southwest Pa. It was a scary looking large animal.

Did they account for all the lions etc from that place in Ohio where the guy turned them loose????
