anybody got one of the oldtimer 858 knives? this is a larger 3 blade pocket knife a little over 4 inches closed, last year i found my grandpa's in his barn [ he died in 1990] it was just sitting on a beam in his tool room, guess the cousins as well as my uncle had overlooked it, i was told i could have it by them, the problem is, the main blade as well as the sheeps foot blade are broken about halfway down their length, ive looked online and apparently schrade closed in 2004, so i cant get it fixed, [i want to fix it and carry it as it was my grandpas] as well as modern knives just dont have the quality this one does, ive got a couple of old ones of dads, and a pile on a shelf of modern cheap knives out of 440 stainless which hold an edge for about 5 minutes , anybody got any ideas? im afraid to work the edges of the broken blades and use as is , as im afraid ill mess up the temper of the blade, i did find somebody somewhere is knocking off cheap copies of this knife, [ 19.95] now you know thats a for sure good one lol a real one should be at least a 100 dollar knife

put it away and don't forget where ya put it (is if that could happen  )

I've got a couple that I'd like to get worked on myself.... I'll have pretty much unlimited time this weekend to find us an answer... Would you be willing to have a knife maker just replace with quality blades???

I was looking online at a couple oldtimer knives (muskrat and a hoofpick knife) but the price screams china......

yes i might see if i can find a knifemaker who can fix it with good quality blades, i did find an original [ slightly used] 858 online for 99.95, ill have to compare how sentiment of it being my grandpas knife compares with the reality of skilled labor lol , its a shame most of the stuff today is cheaply made inferior products, i can see used where you would want a cheap knife to use and discard for some things, but one should also be able to buy a high quality knife that will last a lifetime if one wants one too

I agree with Dave - Put it away for safe keeping.
If I were looking for a pocket knife, I would look at Rocky Mountian Knife Works on line. They carrie everything from cheap to expensive with a lot in between.

My Dad and Grandda always carried Old Timers. I have a few of them, and gave some to family when Dad died in 2002. I think Dad bought a new knife everytime he went to town. The last one was when I help him cut wheat in 1982 and he bought me one too.

Call Smokey Mountain Knife Works near Gatlinburg Tn. Good folks can tell you someone that still has old Shrade Walden blades.

Collector named Ed works at Baker HVAC Supply in Plano Tx. He might have some advice.

Now it's rant time! My old Case carbon steel rust if you don't take care of it sharpens in 25% of time and hold edge 3 times as long as the Buck and Puma stainless. I thought stainless material was more expensive so why not go back to carbon steel????? I suppose Chinermans can't spell carbon still.

Go to the Iforgeiron blacksmith forum. They have some chapters on knives, bladesmithing, and whatnot in addition to blacksmithing chapters. Lots of knowledge and information on that forum. You will be able to get answers there. Armand
