I have a woodchuck problem and want to use a live animal trap to catch it,or them. Anyone have any ideas as to what bait to use.
I do live in an area where you can't fire a gun.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

I use a large Hav A Hart type trap with apples or peanut butter on bread for bait. Then, I give them a bath in the stream, and leave them for buzzard bait. They're hard as hail to shoot unless you have plenty of time or are lucky enough to catch them out.

If you trap a nurseing mom, with young in the den
they will starve and die, if you relocate her!

A couple guys posted a few weeks back that canteloupe (aka musk mellon) works great for woodchucks.

One guy tried it and caught 2 of them in 2 days in his live trap!

I"ll second the cantelope/muskmellon. Placed 3 small tidbits on the ground under a live trap... Within hours, had "chuck captive. Was way too easy!

They"re very destructive little devils, You will do well to declare all out war on them.

They're multiplying and they're getting brave. Last night I saw FIVE of them out in the open in a lawn next to a factory.

Woodchucks have no problem proliferating. They don't need to be shown mercy and relocated... Besides all they'll do is tear up wherever you set them loose... That's not very Christian of you.

Is there something that you can feed them so they'll crawl down in their holes and die?

Ah, but SO Satisfying to Nail them...!!!

Never had any luck "Live-trapping" Groundhogs..

May try the Cantaloupe when I have some..

Now, it seems that I have Muskrats bad...!!

Need to Mow and have all 3 Bowlens mower decks apart for service..and that is just the Start..!!!

Aint life FUN...!!!

Ron..

Last I read the bible, Christianity dictates stewardship over life around us - not dominance or it's destruction.

I live trap many woodchucks and relocate to state forest a few miles away. I don't find anything in the bible that condemns me for that.

I use a Shepard/Doberman mix. He has been with me now for 7 years and
after the first year our problems diminished dramatically. It takes him about 60 seconds to send them to the promised land. He is also very good natured towards humans. Yes , you have to get rid of the remains because he always drops them by the back door to show you that he is earning his keep..

That's just cause you ain't readin it right...Better let some of these folks school ya

Bet someone'll even be able to tell you about the bible condonin coke and flybait...........

A friend of mine who removes nuisance animals said he always had good luck with canned peaches. He said the muskmelon also seems to attract them.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys I will try the cantaloupe, or peanut butter. Don't have any brocoli.

Pete, awhile back I posted an alternator problem on my Ford Windstar van. You were on the money when you said you can not buy a rebuilt alternator and put on that Van. I did not do it right away but I had all sorts of electrical problems until one day I said enough is enough. Bought a rebuilt at a Ford dealer and problems solved. Thank You Pete

How far away are they??? When I lived on post at FT Leonard Wood, our quarters were on the end of the area and bordering a big gully and field. Always had groundhogs in the yard. I sit in the bedroom with a 22 and shoot all the halfgrown ones that showed up. Used shorts. The distance was 20 yds. Pop em between the eyes and noone knew the difference...
Knock out 2 or 3 an evening and just go pick them up after dark... Noone ever heard the shot...

When one of your best cows steps in a woodchuck hole and breaks her leg you will change your mind. Those holes are a danger to people picking up hay.As soon as the rain stops Ill go over the pasture with a rifle looking for chucks.

I long ago gave up shootin or live trappin em. I use connibear 160's on them, eppler fur catalog or Ebay can get you as many as you like, about $12 per trap. I run 6 traps from March to October, last year I got 30 hogs, 3 coons and 3 possums. Up to 6 hogs, and momma possum, and 3 babies, this season. Iggle, and the buzzards is eatin good, and my garden is damage free. Good book says to be good stewards of the land. Them hogs can live all over the farm, but them 6 holes by my garden is off limits! If you are set on usin a live trap, release the bugger in a state park, at least 6 super highways away from home!

I had a dog just like that. She got 50-60 a year and dropped them all in the yard or on front porch. She was a heeler shepherd cross. She done in plenty of racoons and a few stray cats as well but was the childrens best friend as they grew up.

I don't really want to spend the time sitting and
waiting for the critter to show up. When I do see
the critter it is in line with a neighboring house.
I would not have known it was a woodchuck causing
problems if I did not set up a game camera. My
thought was you leave me alone and I leave you
alone. ole woodchuck crossed the line.
