i am new to points. i just picked up a '49 B and a '54 70. i want to tune up my 70. my question is is there any difference in points? is there anyplace that makes a better set of points or even a performance set or should i go to deere and get what they give me? i plan on useing my tractors so any added power would be helpful, thanks.

Went to AG POWER (Deere) to get tune up kits for our Model 70s.

Instead of John Deere parts, they sold me <a href="http://www.aiproducts.com/index.html">A&I Products</a>.

The tune up kit is A-AT14466.

The point set is A-21A112.

These parts also work on all our MTs and M.

Use solid core wires and Autolite 3116 plugs. Many phantom problems will go away. Keep the coolant temps over 180F and carb a wee bit on the lean side.

Just visit your local NAPA store. They will have what you need. All my old tractors run NAPA parts-no problems.'John Deere' parts are no better, just more expencive.

Yes there is a difference in points quality. There used to be three grades. Good, decent, and pittifull. Now a day"s it"s down to just decent & pittifull. Either set from Deere will be fine. The better set at NAPA is fine but stay away from their low end junk.

James, JD bought A&I ten years ago or so. There are a lot of the parts not available through JD any more that come through A&I. One of these being the clutch plates for a JD 3020 or 4020. I can't remember right now but it surprised me that as common as those where that JD quit keeping the parts.
