Repairing a rear axle gear

Is it possible to do a repair on something like a pinion and ring gear or master gear if they have a broken tooth? Can they be welded or pined in any way or are they just scrap?
Thanks
Bill

If it was something like a 1912 Big Four 30, and parts were absolutely unobtainable and it was never going to be used under load, then I'd have someone experienced try to fix it. Under any other circumstance I'd try to find replacements. Ring and pinion gears should be replaced in pairs, although I have replaced individual John Deere governor gears with similarly worn, but unmatched gears. At the plant we repaired broken teeth in spur gears, but they were relatively low speed applications. We usually inserted threaded studs into tapped holes where the missing tooth was, the brazed around them to fill the space. Then the whole works was filed to shape so as to mesh smoothly with the mating gear. All done by hand, but it worked because it had to, we had no other way and the machines had to run.

Yes they can be repaired, but it is a time consuming and expensive job, and not just anyone can do the job.If it is accessable without disassembly,it might be cost effective. If you have to disassemble it anyway,it will probably be easier to replace it with a used one.I have replaced several gear teeth over the years, most turned out OK. I put 4 teeth on a ring gear in a case backhoe and it ran 7 years that I know of and the owner traded it for a newer one.

I had a over drive gesr tooth built up, it made alittle sound for awhile. In another time I had a 4 tooth section of bullgear replaced in an M, I know I should have bought a new one. But the Heisler gear would be hard to find. But we had a very good old time Blacksmith in town, he sold out 5 years ago , we don't do very much fixing anymore. Just buy new or go home.

If you have the broken piece years ago some black smiths did what I think was called "fusion welding". While still hot the part was packed in a box of lime and allowed to cool for a day or so. I have never done it , assume it works but no guarantees.
