paint question

I am going to paint my Massey 135.
Is the rattle can Primer the same as the sprayable type that comes in a gallon can at tractor Supply ?
I am going to use the Tractor Supply enamel Red and Flint grey metallic as the top coats.
If the rattle cans are OK I can get the teenagers to shoot it with the rattle cans.
Then I can dirty the gun on the top coats.
Going to be a working tractor not a show piece, but I still want a decent job.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Be guided on what to use for paint by how much prep you are going to do. Don't put $200.00/gal. paint over a two hour prep job, don't put $20.00/ gal paint over 50 hour prep job. Sounds like you are doing the two hour prep so the rattle can primer should work just fine.

You are really better leaving it alone unless you do the full prep job. I do not know if you want to do that amount of work. It involves steam cleaning, then sanding, then washing to remove the dust.

Most paint jobs are better left undone if you're not going to go to the trouble and expense of doing it right. But to answer your question rattle can paint and primer is not the same stuff that comes in gallon cans. I probably wouldn't use Tractor Supply paint for anything that I wanted to look good.

No matter which..you NEED to wet-sand your primer down at least Twice and then, Wet-Sand to Dead Smooth After you have applied a primary coat of your Finish Color..
Then, your Final coat should go on Dead Smooth and have a nice sheen..

The correct way to paint the tractor would be to take it down to the metal and use an epoxy primer and topcoat with a urethane. If I were going to short change the paint job I would skip the rattle can primer and topcoat with Sher-kem enamel from Sherwin Williams. It can be used directly over the existing paint or bare metal.

My best guess is that if have teenagers shoot it with rattle cans... is that you will end up with lots of runs and a bad looking paint job.
