2nd Step Mother-in -law was a grand niece of Devil Anse Hatfield, she claimed it was over a hog. Remembers her elders talking about how kinfolk were held in jail in Louisville and their elders fretting about it at the time. Don't know how much of it was true, she tended to embellish her stories a bit.

I heard that it started right after the Civil War, when one of the families took exception to the service of a member of the other family on the other side, and killed him. Don't recall which family did the killing, or which side the victim served on. The fued went on for something like 35 years.
I've also heard the pig story, and it kind of makes sense when you consider that these folks were very poor subsistence farmers and stealing their pig took food off their table.

One of the better documentary series about the feud was on Saturday mornings, called "Hillbilly Bears". I remember watching it when I was a kid. ;o)

Read up on it several years ago. Happened a good while after the civil war and war problems discounted. They fought over land and politics. I'll have to look it up again. 19th century folks took fueds seriously. There were some bad ones in TX and AZ.

I think that Family Feud was in West Virginia.
It may have started when one of the women took 2nd place in a beauty contest and the Ham in the roaster took 1st place. Then the fists started flying. A redneck good time.

Ongoing fueds are pretty common between different
families/groups to this day in WVA,E KY and western Va most that I know about started over something to do with Moonshine.

I saw a documentary on it once. Lots of little things but one old boy owned a great deal of lumber land and the other side's lawyer got it away from him. Money and a lawyer behind it like all ways.
