THANKS to all those who served and have passed on and THANKS to those still with us!

Although I never served due to an old leg injury, I have much respect for those who did. Guess that's why I drive my restored Jeep in our local parade and am priviledged to carry some of our heroes. I will do it again this year.

My Dad and I spent a couple hours this afternoon putting flags on the graves of veterans at a local cemetery. My dad is on the board of directors of the cemetery, and we have been putting the flags out for at least 25 years.

Still the land of the free, home of the brave, one nation under God and the greatest nation on the face of the earth. We owe it all to those gave and for those that gave there all. We are forever in your debt.

As a Veteran, I tried to copy and paste this, to send to friends, other Veterans, family, and friends. didn"t work. This is a touching memorial to those who died in service to our Country, the REAL meaning of Memorial Day. I wish I knew how to do this. The first pic reminded me of the "American Idol" cartoon- showing a grandpa and grandson in a Veterans cemetery, Grandpa saying...."these are the real American Idols". They truly are.

The scouts have put flags on graves for the past few years at the Veteran's Facility. Some of the markers date back to the Civil War. About 3,000 graves were marked. It is a very impressive and moving sight.

Here's a photo of my father's B17 crew taken in August 1943 after a bombing mission over Rome, Italy.

Young man on the first row on the right wearing a T shirt is William "The Kid" Guilfoil.

He enlisted at 17 years old after learning his older brother had been captured by the Japanese and had survived the Bataan Death March.

Bill Guilfoil celebrated his 19 birthday about a week after this photo was taken.

On October 5, 1943 over Bologna, Italy, the bomber was severely damaged by flak and was attacked by 10 German fighters.

The crew members shot down 5 enemy aircraft before the order was given to bail out.

Bill Guilfoil shot down 2 fighters before he was mortally wounded.

When asked if he needed help to bail out he replied "I'll stay with my guns".

He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery.

Thats why we need to do more then, thank them for their service.Man,that hit me right in my heart, thanks for posting this

Nice picture James. Ten years later we were drafted. My late brother joined the Air Force in 1951 3 days after we graduated from High School. At least 3 of the men I went through basic training have died. Here are some pics from Ft Bragg taken in 1953. Hal
