Birds in pole barn

As some have heard Ive spent the last weeks cleaning up and organizing my shop and pole barn after thirty years of neglect. As previously posted, last year I couldnt find a single chain boomer when I needed to haul something, but in the last week I found 18......As I no longer farm or haul or trade farm machinery, I'm gonna keep 6 and take the rest to Dinkys auction. Those 5/16 and 3/8 to 1/2 are like $40 and more today.............

So, anyone had good luck or experience with any electronic means (those high frequency thingys) of ridding the barn of sparrows/spatsies?????

Any other methods (Im NOT into chemical or dope or spikey things on allllllllllllll the rafters 14 ft high) to rid the pole barn of them yall have had good luck with???????

Im in the process of sealing all the entry holes right now as that is the ulitmate fix and a BB Gun and/or 22 bird shot are options I'm considering in the short run........

Talk to me, tell me a cheap easy way (until I get it sealed) to get them out and keep them out.

String 8# fishing line in random lines thru the ceiling area. They hit it and soon leave- they can't see it when they're flying.

I have used short lengths of rope (looks like a snake) The best ones were just a light colored grass rope. I have also tried several different ones from stores, and NONE of them worked. I did have a kite that looked like a hawk that was hanging in a barn that also worked well.

Interesting. They worked well for me. Birds were ruining my peaches. I used cheap plastic snakes in my peach trees. Worked very well. No more pecked fruit.

Sparrows had the run of my pole barn for years, but we kept the doors open most of the time. We tried keeping the doors closed, but the sparrows would just squeeze in under the doors. I do not have concrete in my shed, just gravel. I bought some fine gravel and put it up right to the bottom of the sliding doors and was diligent about keeping it flush to the bottom of the doors. Once the birds find they can no longer get back to their nests, they will find other places to go. I still try to keep my doors closed most of the time and even when they are open now, birds very seldom fly in.

Its trueeeeeee many were found hidden under bigger piles of "stuff",,,,,,,,Some were in the outer covered portions of the barn hidden under "junk",,,,,,,,,Some were in an old truck,,,,,,,,,Its funny how NONE were out in open visible to the eys when I hurriedly looked last year grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr THEYRE ALL 18 gathered up n hanging together now however wooooooo hoooooo

I also found like an entire drill index 1/16 up to 1/2 and all are back in the holder now with only a few of the tiny ones missing that usually get broke anyway......Two Bloomfield Jacks,,,,5 bottle jacks,,,,,,,,,three scissor jacks,,,,,,three bumber jacks,,,,,,,two railroad jacks are alllllll gathered up in propewr places now wooooooooooo hoooooooooooo makes me wanna go to the shop n build something again lol

Yea when I need a tool or something I go over to the barn where I drop off all my box lots from auctions after I take out what I was actually buying it to get.I find all sorts of neat useful things. One of these days I'm going to clean it all out.One of these days.........
As far as the birds moth balls will usually make about any animal abandon ship.

I've covered the windows with black plastic and hung a strip of black plastic 18" wide across the top of the open door. The door stays open all the time. The plastic waves in the wind, and I have no trouble with birds flying in there.

Ohio Jim, I'm the 3rd generation of packrat & auction shopper on my farm.

I know _exactly_ what his building looks like.... ;)

(quoted from post at 13:26:49 05/24/12) 18 chain boomers and you couldn't find 1,...i'd like to see a picture of that place LOL

Lol, that's what I was thinking until I recently just found my shovel I looked for all weekend. It was leaning against the tractor tire. The tractor tire I walk past to get in and out of the garage. ...if it were a snake...

We put lots of boards up laying in the rafters and made a spot for the cats to get up on them. The pigeon nests and pigeons were soon fixed in that shed.

John........when I had problems with pidgins in the loft of my barn, I used 22-shot in my pistol. 22-shot will NOT pierce sheetmetal roofing. I impressed my wife (non-shooter and anti-gun) I thought I was a lousy shot (missed several) but they got the hint and left fer parts unknown .......bang-bang Dell

Since you found everything maybe you could come to Az. & help straighten my sheds and put the tools back where they are supposed to be. Ha, Ha. I know that I have the tools just where I don t remember . Old age is diffcult at times .

John T,

Your pole barn sounds a lot like mine. I started building mine about 14 years ago and worked on it off and on for a couple years as I had time. The building is 30x60 ft. and intended to pour concrete floor in a 30x40 ft. section for a work shop. The problem is I started storing tools, farm equipment. left over building supplies, everything. The wife even started putting her yard sale stuff in with my prized possesions. I didn't have birds, I had bees everywhere, I was afraid to move anything because of the bee nests. It started looking like a hoarders nightmare, I couldn't find things I knew I had. After I semi-retired I knew I had to do something so I listed stuff on Craigslist and went to flea markets, one guy at a flea market said man you are giving your stuff away. I thought I don't care it does not mean as much to me as it did. Now I have my building back and can do what I planned to do before I got side tracked with all this great stuff.

John a cheap and good way to rid birds is to put a thin film of grease where ever they can roost. They get it on there feet and they don't like it. It is cheap and once there it last for a long time.

i have these batt operated owl's that i bought from wally-world, they hoot & holler and scares birds away,,,or you can put uncle Ben's fast puffing rice out for them, then after they drink h2o, bye-bye birdies

I have been want'n to go to Dinky's for about a year now. Guy I work with was raised up that way in a ford tractor dealership and says his dad really likes go'n. Are there any deals to be found there and is it true that they always seem to have at least one of about any thing? Just wander'n, seems like every time I have Friday night off from work the wife finds something we need to do together, guess I need to make her mad again,,,, or talk her into a two hour road trip to an auction,,,

Thanks.

Dave

Ive been there a lot on and off for yearssssssss and YES on any given night you can find about ANYTHING there, the good the bad and the ugly.

They did have like 9 sale rings ongoing at once: Box lots,,,,,fowl game,,,,,,,livestock,,,,,,new flea market type stuff,,,,,,,,antiques n tools on a wagon,,,,,,,,,outside tools n junk and vehicles,,,,,,,,,inside tools n junk

PLUS there are the food vendors and produce vendors and frozen foods vendors and fresh amish baked goods. Much of it is that which has come off shelf life and/or the packaging is crumpled and torn etc or the food mashed

Only trouble is its slowwwwwww you have to wait in line to get your bid paddle then wait agaan to pay,,,,,,,they tacked on a 6% BUYERS premium,,,,,,,theres a lot of pure JUNK there..

First off do you have doors on the building ?

Secondly I don't put sliding doors on only overhead roll up doors with a footer under where they shut. This will keep them out.

Sounds like a good time.

I went with a buddy of mine to my first pure Amish sale this past winter. I had a hoot go'n around take'n pics of stuff I found. (Who knew you could mount a hydraulic motor on a hand crank sausage grinder?)

If it don't rain down this way pretty soon I should have plenty of time to try to make it some time this summer.

Thanks.

Dave
