Here is a few photos of corn I planted in mid March using my Ford 8N and a one row JD planter. It is RR corn but I cultivated it with my 1941 JD H.It is about to tassel and we have had plenty of moisture. Used chicken litter before planting and liquid N at about 2 foot tall. Only chemical used for weeds was Atrazine preplant. No Roundup applied.

So at two seed per hill, how many ears will each stalk produce? would it produce more if only one seed per hill?

We will find that out at harvest. My son planted same seed and his "modern" planter put out one seed per hill. Plant population is almost exactly the same. We have been having that discussion. Will let you know.

Most corn today is bred to produce one ear per stalk. So each stalk will most likely produce one ear. It doesn't make a lot of difference if there is 1 stalk every 8 inches or 2 stalks every 16 inches, they will still only produce one ear apiece. Size of ear may differ if it were 1 every 8 rather than 2 every 16. The stalks utilize the sun better when spread out.

To get maximum yeild you try to get all the plants spaced as evenly as you can. Then you select your spacing depending on your fertility.
