O/T Fire alarm

I went to the auction today a picked up this Simplex type 4050 fire alarm. when i hook it up to power though it it only moves once. I know its and electromagnet and that it shuld turn on and off causeing the metal to buzz but mine wont do that. I believe there is a special switch that will pulse the power but i cant think off the name of it.
Does anybody know what that part is called?

And what a Simplex alarm is worth?

Most of these style horns are 24 volt dc that is polarity specific. I believe the device you are referring to is a synch module which will pulse the dc to the horn.

Thanks, this is actually a 6volt alarm, do you know where you could find just this part?

A starter motor commutator can be rewired to make pulsed DC. Every third or fourth bar is connected together to conduct. Then use a Small DC motor to drive it at what ever speed you want. Jim
