Corn planting delay question

I'm in central Illinois and planting has been done for some time like 30 to 45 days. Just was on phone with my cousin in S. ky., like 100 mi. S. of Louisville He says they are just now planting corn in the area.Is there a reason why they wait so late? A lot is used for silage as there is a bit of dairy .Just curious.

sweet corn does better early , but your gambling sometimess with weather, not as many insects either and usually we get enough rain early, corn in hot weather needs alot of water.I got lucky and planted 1st day of march will have corn in 2 weeks to eat if not sooner

I still have 80 acres to go. It was dry dry dry, then the rain turned on for a week and it got chilly. Some guys that did plant in the dry had poor emergence once it did rain because of crusting, and others had frost damage.

Thats fairly close to me here in Indiana. Weve been done here since last week of April. Some guys waited to plant because of the dry weather. If there plantin silage corn they are after mass of the plant versus yield of the ear like we are with regular yellow corn. Ive seen guys plant silage corn double crop after wheat a few times.

In Ohio it used to be normal and you never jumped the gun even if ground was ready to plant before May 15. That is the way it was when I was growing up. And with that one rear had ground freeze solid after planting. Luckey it had not yet sprouted. I would hate to go before April 25 now yet but seams new varieties can stand more cold.
