where can i locate a wiring diagram on-line can't seem to locate one, having trouble with fuse blowing in transmission circuit

I have been having the same problem. Iam looking for wiring diagram to hook up electric brakes for trailer on 97 GMC K1500. I have found several sites that say they have the diagrams but you have to sign up for one of their programs and they run around $20.00 to $40.00 a year. I had problem with transmission not shifting past second gear. Found something chewed the insulation off wirers to drive shaft sensor and it was shorting out.

I just used a test light on the brake light switch and tapped the wire where it was easy to reach. I picked up a hot wire under the hood, there is an empty post on the fuse box, and you just add a fuse(30) and I put a breaker(20) after that.

I was into Gmc dealer today and they said the truck should be prewired for electric brakes. Tomorrow I will see if the wires are where they said they should be. If not I will have do what you said.

96 should be the same as my 97. Go to your local friendly parts store, pick up a Haynes manual, 20-30 bucks.
If pre-wired, the blue & orange 10 ga wires are coiled up & tucked below steering column, under the hood. Have to reach down with left hand to find them. Other end will be tucked up along rear of left frame rail. Wires for lights will be coiled up at center of rear frame cross member. There ae 2 studs at fuse box under hood on left fender well, with the matching fuse socket marked. Metric studs, think 8 mm.
Don't remember for sure, think the wire you need to pick up brake feed to controller is white.
Starting in 99 there was a plug on the heavy wires under hood to mate to controller.
