Oliver 1850 pto Help!!!

Ok so when I bought the tractor I was told it was 540/1000 pto. They gave me the 540 shaft and the 1000 shaft was on the tractor. I went to switch to 540 and realized that the selector shaft ( below and to the right of pto) was missing and I don't see or feel a gear or a port. On the tractor it says push in for 540 pull out for 1000. But I think it's 1000 only. How do I tell if it is 1000 pto only? And is it possible or economical to change it to a dual pto or just 540?

Yep single speed pto the writeing is cast into the case and is there if its single or dualspeed. We changed one back in the 70's,you have to buy at least the gear and shifter.Other parts you don't need can be put in there too.

To the lower right of the PTO shaft, is there a short shaft with a threaded hole in the end of it ? If so , that is your shifter, just screw a 3-6 inch bolt in the hole and use that for your shift handle. The single speed PTO has a cup type core plug in the cover where the shifter rod would go.

Right under the PTO shifter in the drawbar area, there is a shift lock bolt to hold the shifter in either 540 or 1000 speed. It takes a pair of 9/16 wrenches to loosen the lock nut and turn the lock bolt out 4-5 turns. The end of the lock bolt is pointed and fits into a hole in the shde of the shifter shaft to hold it in the selected PTO speed.

Remove the pto shaft,(remove snap ring around bearing) before attempting to shift the speed.

Im missing the lock bolt andthe short shaft I don't see a cup type plug. I see the hole where the shifter shaft would normally be and the threaded hole for the lock bolt I can put my pinkie in the shaft hole but I don't feel any thing maybe that's cause of th plug you mentioned.
