Missouri Weekly Hay Summary Week ending 05/11/12

Reports this week indicate a bad situation in Southern Missouri's fields
with True Army-Worms moving through and dry conditions leaving little
optimism for the hay harvest. The Northern half of the state is seems to
be looking at just an average crop at this early stage of the season.
Prices are steady, demand is moderate, supply is light.
Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both
buyers and sellers. To be listed,or for a directory, visit http://mda.mo.gov/

Last year that is how it looked here in Texas.

With the nice rains we have been receiving this season, I doubt there will be the same problem driving the cost like it did.

However, diesel is still high and will bump the price up somewhat. Doubt that hay prices will ever drop to where they used to be: Once you taste honey (good $$$ for your work) hard to go back, diesel is up as is seed and fertilizer. Glad I bought my own haying equipment after last year's drought.

Even grinding hay here is higher. It is going $100-120 per ton. Good grass hay will bring $125-150.
Good Alfalfa Rounds will bring $225-275. Big square good alfalfa will bring $300 plus.

Hay is going to be a hot thing around here this fall/winter. There where too many fields torn out to plant corn/beans. Not much green when you look out over the country.

The last bales I sold this past winter which are the 5.5X5.5 bales I was getting $50 per bale. I think the one feed store in my area that has them is getting for a 4X4 bale $39 and this is the Lake of the Ozarks area of misery

Just SE of there in Arkansas it just depends on how much quality you want.

Net wrapped bermuda $40
string bermuda $35

Net wrapped fescue or ryegrass $35

mixed non fertilized grass string $25-30

all this year hay and 4x5 bales and all prices loaded in the field

Another factor that will help keep the price of hay up in Texas is there's no carry over hay because of the drought last year and then throw in the high price of cattle.
