mower shear pin

Must you use a factory shear pin for a 3pt. rotary mower or is a low grade bolt ok?

Thanks

While they not cheap, it"s cheaper than a twisted and broken mower. There are pto slip clutches on the shelf at TSC. Adjust it suit.

It's been so long since I got my little Bush Hog I can't remember what came in it. I use a 1/2" soft bolt. Cutting brush with a 65 HP tractor I broke a lot of bolts. Now I mow grass/weeds witn an AC "C". Don't break any bolts!

If the factory bolt is available I guess it's the better option but every piece of farm equipment that I've purchased that required a shear bolt specified a grade 2 bolt. I can tell you from personal experience that they work just fine. Broke one on a Brillion subsoiler just the other day. Cleanest break you ever saw.

I try to use a grade 2 bolt, but usually wind up with a grade 5. When I hit something it seems to shear just as well as the 2.

Only time I ever had a problem mowing was with an 8' Mohawk, twin 4' blades and 3 gearboxes. Was running a 100 hp tractor on it and it had a slip clutch which was supposed to slip and didn't, even though I had serviced it. Ran over a berm and destroyed the central box.

Haven't used a slip clutch since.

Normally a grade 5 bolt is used. So-called "grade 2" (aka chinese-made hardware store bolts) are so soft they'll fail under light use.
