Gasket material under brush band on starter

On most of the starters I've taken apart, there is some sort of paper material under the band that covers the brushes.

Would gasket material work as a replacement?

I've been using strips cut from a roll of gasket paper for my starters and generators. Seems to work just fine.

DO NOT use masking tape or duct tape , use gasket
material . starters and generators will sweat, the
gasket material will absorb the moisture and act
like a wick.

Pep Boys has a nice gasket paper variety pack that gives a good selection. I'm not sure if Pep Boys is nationwide but it a nice pack of gasket stuff to keep around. I'm thinking other auto parts must have that. It keeps moisture out.

I buy 1/32" gasket material in rolls so that I can cut it width before I remove it from the package. The saw leaves a little fuzz on the edges but it sure saves time.
