Should I thank him?

All of a sudden I`m crazy busy and moving up in the world thanks to a neighbor/landlord jerking me around. He gave me permission to clear some old fields, then kicked me off halfway through clearing them, tons of trees on the ground, stumps still poking up, said there was too much liability having me on the ground. I said to heck with it, put an add on craigslist and got a call within 4 hours, and leased 144 acres for 5 years, for the cost of cleaning up some of the ground a prior renter let go. In 24 hours went from 35 acres, to 15, to 159.

I'd make dam sure he knows about it, leave everything laying in his fields, and treat the new folks real good... And make sure any other potential renters know how the first guy did me... and not hesitate to beat his a$$ if he ever crossed me...

That's just me and my impeckable people skills tho.....

I don't know about thanking him, but I would definitly thank
the good Lord, that sounds like it couldn't have turned out
any better for you. I fell into a similar deal this winter, clean
up the edges of the fields and its mine to farm for 5yrs. And
as a added bonus I finally had a good reason to buy a
bulldozer! Land owner was impressed with the clean up job
and is already talking about another 5. So treat him extra
good and you might have a long term deal on the cheap.

I don't get that liability thing either. Acreage had tenant on it running cattle. Called tenant to find out about owner's contact info because he had some old forgotten piece of equipment on it I wanted to restore, for parts. Tenant ran interference but got the same answer: Too risky, too much liability for me to be on the land and to load that equipment and remove it! Told him I sign a waiver first, nope...

when you are sitting on the porch drinking a cold one, raise it up to him, and say "thanks for making you get a better deal"...lol

Dave, He is already backpedaling, he is gonna be real peeved when he finds out about my new lease. We had a little "discussion" out on the road where he tried to tell me to finish cleaning the fields, but not to cut hay. After that my dad got a call asking if dad would try to change my mind because I`m "hot tempered and rude" :)

I`m already getting along well with the new landlord, he asked me to do all the brushhogging before I take any hay, he was very pleased when told him I intend for it all to be done by next week. Reasonable people are so refreshing.....

I'd get it all in writing and legal like... that new guy could be taking you for a ride also and he just threw up a big red flag to a trusting guy like me.....

I can rub my crystal ball a litt now and see you doing all the clean up ("brushhoging before you take hay") and then an "ohshit, I got liability issues and can't let you on there"....

Just a thought.....This ain't Mayberry no more..........

I will go by thee today, in fact...
Why would the liability issue be different for the scrap guy? When I talked to the owner of the land, I told him I got cash in hand...he didn't even get interested, the liability was his only "concern"! I'll keep you posted.

Could also be that he's like some of the clowns on here that gets bent outta shape cause they think your snoopin on there property (some don't comprehend the fact that you can see it from the road) and won't deal wifya.....

Nah, fool me once, shame on you, that kind of thing. When I put an add on craigslist for more ground I mentioned that no ground will be worked without a legal signed contract, and we drew up a very comprehensive contract with length of lease, allowable uses for both parties, payment etc.
He seems much more stable than the first guy, but I am never going through this kind of hassle again without something I can show a judge.

Gee, nice of him to change his mind and want you to do all the rest of the work, but get nothing in return... Sounds like you are much better off with the new deal, congrats on getting out of it Before you finished everything else.
