Long life of a Garden Tractor Battery

This is a positive note about a Sear's Diehard Gold lawn and garden battery. I tried to start my lawn tractor yesterday, the battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge. Thinking back, I couldn't remember when I last changed it. I took it out and was surprised to see the date of manufactor as 9/99. It was working good last fall so that means it lasted over 12 years. I do not take any extra care of my batteries, never take it out over the winter or put on a battery tender.
Maybe this was an exception, but I feel it's worth buying another, even at $59. I remember getting only 2 years at best from the ones I would buy at Tractor supply, so the cost is s lot less based on years of service.

Not sure who makes the gold L&G battery for Sear's, but have been told they are made by Johnson Controls.

I use their Diehard motorcycle batteries in an old White rotary mower and a Troy Bilt tiller. Both are at least 10 years old.

I never had very good luck with those small garden tractor batteries. I use a full size GM battery from Walmart in my garden tractor. I also have their batteries in my cars. I just replaced one that was 12 years old and still held a charge, but didn't want to press my luck.

My garden tractor has a starter/generator and requires more amperage than an electric starter
and you don't get the benefit of the mechanical advantage like you do when the starter gear engages the ring gear. Hal

Your battery was made by Exide.Sears and Sams Club quit Exide and do use Johnson Control batteries now.Interstate markets Johnson Control batteries.Always makes me smile when some one says one brand is better than another.
