Maybe some of ya'll already know this, but the American Legion recently came out with a program that discounts the price of hearing aids for members and immediate family.

A month or so ago, my wife finally accepted the fact that she needed hearing aids. Since Legion members get a prescription discount card, (only applies to prescriptions not covered by insurance), while I was looking for options for hearing aids for my wife, I happened to surf the "Benefits" page on the Legion website and found a link for discounts on hearing aids through a company called "HearPO". It allows you to pull up local providers.

Upshot was, we got my wife a pair of hearing aids that normally would have cost $7400 for the total of $4100, with 48 month financing. It includes one year of free batteries. That's about a 45% discount.

The program is new enough that my wife was only the second case our particular provider handled. The May American Legion magazine has an article about it on page 60.

We decided the annual membership dues are a good investment. So--if any of ya'll who are members, or eligible for membership, need hearing aids you might want to check it out.

I'm near deaf. Last pair of aids I bought cost $4000 for the pair. These are behind the ear style. In the ear are no longer powerful enough. This was about 4 years ago. Been wearing aids since 1985 and price has decreased over the years, can't imagine the price doubling in 4 years.

When I got a pair from the VA a couple of years ago, I asked the gal how much they would cost if I had to buy them myself. She said about $7000. That sounded in line with what friends have paid for the same style.

I doubt she had reason to inflate it, although I realize, like everything else, someone can quote whatever price they want for the undiscounted price.

Good for you and thanks for the tip.... I hope you and/or your wife help out with fundraisers etc with your local Legion post so they can afford to help others and support other programs... That 25 bucks a year ain't goin far......

If you are qualified to be a legion memeber, you are qualified to go to the VA. The hearing aids are not top shelf, but the cost would be transfered to you state's medicare.
And the VA does give you stuff insurance, medicaid/medicare might not want to cover, and just shoves the state the bill. You judge whether it is unethical and deciteful on the VA's part, but it works for the people that need it.
