Hydraulic- Gresen 2 spool monoblock

I have several Gresen 2 spool monoblock Hydraulic controls used for loaders. I had a 772a Ford loader that needed a control replaced (on a Ford 6600). I installed one Gresen control onto the machine but the #1 spool (left- should be lift) only goes up about a foot and sounds like its cylinders are topped out. Spool #2 (right- should be bucket) works fine. Could this control have a different spool on 1 side for lift only? The ports had iron plugs in them (I figured they were to keep dirt out since this was removed from something previously, but the far port on #1 was in very tight. I am not to learned on hydraulic valves. This is my first education in this field. Any thought or reply will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It has been several years since I seen one but what I remember the valve should have an inlet and an outlet port on either side of the valve and two ports coming out the top of the valve on the top of each spool. If one side is not working right, I would imagine it either has some dirt in the bore or is scored to where it is not getting full travel. I would take it apart carefully and wash it out and check the spools. It has been a long time since I had one apart, but it seems like they had an o-ring on each end of the bore. They are a simple valve so it should be working, unless you have something coming apart in your cylinder. Seems like there was also a pressure regulater valve somewhere in the block too.

Sometimes it works to use compressed air to find out what port does what job. Put the valve in a position (centered, pushed, pulled) and hook up an air hose to each port to see what happens. If one spool is for a single acting cylinder, the port which had the tight plug will probably not ever allow air to any other place, or maybe just to the reservoir port. No guarantees, but maybe a place to start.

Those valves were made so variations could be made available. Do you have a casting number? I still have some SP (model of the valve)literature left from when I taught Gresen classes. Let me know, I can mail that literature to you.

Not that familiar with those two tractors, but are you trying to run a closed center valve on an open center tractor?

Well I am still at a loss... But I did find a PDF file on the Gresen control. I am still "hydraulic illiterate" but it does appear that these units may have different spools available. Perhaps the spool on the right (#1) is of the wrong variety? I think that is the problem. I hope that I can order just this spool. Am I on the right track? Or am I just digging the hole deeper? If I trade hoses, lift to right (#2) dump to left (#1), opposite occurs: lift works and dump hangs up. I guess I should have studied hydraulics before I tried this. After research, I also believe that this control was off of a 600 or Jubilee with single direction lift cylinders.

Back in my JD service manager employment I was taught the only parts that can be replaced on a spool valve were external but "no spools"

No you can not order replacement spools, they are selective fit when they make the valves. Standing behind the valve the one on the left should lift your loader. It may be single acting or double acting. It may also have float. Also Ford had some variations made just for Ford. The one on the right should dump your bucket.

What happens when you try to run your bucket lift as a single acting cylinder? Also on the outlet side of the valve, (right side) are there 2 ports to which hoses can be attached to?
