Ok guys, younger farmer here seeking advice. At what stage do I need to apply my second application of nitrogen? I will be spli applying ammonium nitrate by broadcasting. Also at what stage can I spray and not have to much damage by running over the corn? Also where can I find the different the different stages of corn and what it looks like in those stages. Thank you!

Corn pokes out of the ground, gets to 4 leaves or so, and sits there for a couple weeks. It is building it's root sytem, not much is going on above ground. The actual growing point of the corn is still below ground.

This is why some weed sprays can be used up to the 5 leaf stage, but not after.

Anyohw, if anything messes up that period of time the roots are growing, the corn plant will switch and try to grow more stalk. That will terribly mess it up, and you just lost 50 bu an acre or more.

The corn doesn't like to be shaded at this time. If it gets shaded by a weed, it will stop growing the root, and add more stalk.

So..... Weed control at that time is _critical_ to top yields.

Your fields might not look too bad for weeds,a nd you'll feel like waiting, get more weeds if I wait a bit to spray...

Nope. You lost the game. Gotta get those weeds under control early.

You are very right about weed control in corn, Paul. If you have to kill a weed in corn you are already behind. Start clean and keep it that way. Mike
