John Deere Type E Ignition

Well, we got the engine back together but are now fighting ignitor problems. The magneto is firing, but the points in the ignitor refuse to open when tripped or close when tripped. As near as we can tell, they are supposed to be closed until tripped by the exhaust push rod. When we wind up the torsion spring enough to make the points jump open when the hammer is tripped, they stay open because the torsion spring holds them open. Any help here is much appreciated.

If this is a make and break system, I think the push rod pushes the points togather, and when it slipps off they open from the pressure of the spring.

Sam- Here are the pages from the book. If you call JD, they have the entire manual.
