How would i know if my pickup has a chip in it? I have not had this pickup very long and it has way more power than my 02 dodge 2500 . Both pickups are identical with the Cummins engine 6 speed and 4 wheel drive.Or is there just that much more power in the newer ones?

I've got an '04.5. I can't recall exactly, but I know there was a significant hp increase over the previous version. I think mine is 325 hp, 600 ft/lbs.

Jeff is right...There was a bump up in horsepower and torque. I have a 2005. 325 HP & 610 ft/lbs of torque.

Lot's of different programmers available for these trucks, and it'd be pretty obvious if you had one, just by the control knob installed on or under the dash, or by a box with some non-Mopar name on it strapped under the hood.

Just enjoy it the way it is !

most chips i've seen are mounted on the electrical distribution box, on the left side fender... newer trucks have lots more power, my 99.5 has 215hp stock, chipped it by 60hp... neighors 05 is 325 stock... i don't think the 02s had much more hp than the 99.5s. In all the chipped trucks i've been in, they will smoke if you floor the loud pedal in the mid gears from low rpms.

When I was at Dodge I attended a training session when this topic came up. The instructor said to first check overhead compass/mini-trip. He said if mileage was way off per callon, it was chipped.

In 03 the engines changed to meet emissions and get more power. An 03 with a 6spd was rated at 305 hp from the factory. Its already got your 02 beat. They went from a electronic controlled rotary pump to High pressure common rail system with electronic controlled injectors. This system is 10x better than the junk VP44 pump on the 98-02 motors. I had an 03 with a 6spd. The truck was pretty stought from the factory. If your truck does have a chip on it then there should be a small black box on the drivers side of the truck on top of the main fuse box under the hood. Most have velcro to hold the box on so that it can be removed easily. If you do not have a chip on it then it is possible that someone put a programer on the truck and never took it off. The only way to tell this is to have it hooked to a computer to read the ECM and tell what programming it has in it. Odds are though its either stock or has a chip. As easy as a programmer is to take on an off I'd say someone would have taken it off if it had one before they sold it. 03 and newer trucks run a lot better than the 02's did like I and others have said though. With yours being an 05 I would say you still have a stock truck. Out of all the 03-early 07 model trucks I've been around 05's always run the best as far as having more power chipped or not. Hope this helps.

I wish the overhead trip computer was remotely accurate, my truck running stock (haven't had it chipped in a couple years) lies by 5mpg consistently. Truck says 19.5, and checks closer to 14.5.
